Amanda’s Story: WeWork’s investment in Red Cross First Aid training pays off

It was a normal day at work. Around
lunchtime, someone came up to me and said “I think we need to call 911. One one of my colleagues is choking.” My name is Amanda and I work at WeWork. Through a
partnership with the American Red Cross, I recently got CPR and First Aid certified. Because of that training I was able to save a life. I’m Matt I work at the co-working space with Amanda. I was at lunch sitting on a table with my
co-workers and I started choking. I told someone to call 9-1-1 and I ran up to Matt. I actually had a broken shoulder at the time, so my arm was in a sling. I took
the sling off and started to perform the back blows. On the third strike it actually dislodged the item from his throat and he was able to breathe again. And that actually helped me a lot in terms of getting that air that I needed. Had she
not done that, I would have been a goner and honestly I think she saved my life. I was notified by our security team that the local chapter of the American Red Cross here in New York wanted to acknowledge what I did. They presented me with a certificate and a medal for what I had done. Having the American Red Cross say that it was such a big deal is a really big deal to me. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be talking to you guys and I think that for me, I’m
always indebted to her help and for her being there in my time of need. I think everybody should get CPR certified, it’s serious. You could be the only person that knows how to save someone else’s life.
