Common Softball Injuries

> DR. CENTURION, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON SPORTS ASSOCIATED WITH UPPER BODY INJURIES? DR. CENTURION: ANY SPORT WITH OVERHEAD USE OF THE ARMS. SWIMMING, VOLLEYBALL, SOFTBALL OR BASEBALL, SPORTS LIKE THAT. > SOFTBALL, I KNOW THAT WE HAVE MANY INJURIES BECAUSE OF THAT INTENSE THROWING. MAYBE I’M WRONG, BUT IS IT DIFFERENT FOR MEN VERSUS THAN WOMEN? > THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL IS DUE TO THE PITCHING MECHANICS. SO THE FOREARM STRESS INJURY TO THROW A FASTBALL, CURB ALL WITH THE UNDERHAND MOTION, IT REQUIRES THE ARM TO FLIP OVER AND PERMIT A BIT, SO FLIP THE ARM SO YOUR PALM IS DOWN, WHICH PUTS INCREASED STRESS ON ONE OF THE BONES IN THE FOREARM. THE SAME MOTION REQUIRES FLEXION OF THE BICEPS BUT NOT CURLING, LIKE YOU WOULD IMAGINE. IT IS A TIGHTENING OF THE BICEPS AS IT STRETCHES. SO THIS CAN CAUSE PAIN AND INFLAMMATION. THE THIRD ONE ON THE LIST, THE WIND UP AS THE ELBOW COMES BY IT CAN HIT THE HIP OF THE PATIENT, THAT CONSTANT COMPRESSION OF THE MEDIAL ASPECT OF THE ELBOW CAN CAUSE IRRITATION AGAINST THE FUNNY BONE AREA. YOU CAN GET SOME PAIN AT THE MEDIAL ELBOW, BUT SOME NUMBNESS ON THE FED FIFTH DIGIT OF THE HAND. LASTLY, THIS UCL INJURY IS ONE WE SEE MORE IN BASEBALL OR FIELDERS.
THAT OVERHEAD THROWING MECHANISM CAN CAUSE STRESS ON THE OLDER COLLATERAL LIGAMENT.
