  1. It's accelerated marine corrosion (oxidation). The calcium and magnesium which make up the coral structure are metals which lose their electrons very easily and oxidize. Bleaching(whitening) is a result of oxidation. It will be primarily accelerated by other sources of EMF(voltage) in the seawater that setup galvanic couples with the metals(minerals) and then oxidize them as they lose their electrons. Temperature will have an effect but corrosion rates are primarily influenced by EMF in the seawater triggering galvanic and stray electrical current corrosion. It's the same corrosion that all marine vessels fight, but calcium and magnesium are the most reactive metals so they corrode more easily.
