Disaster Medical Team Returns From Deployment in Florida, Puerto Rico

WE ARE TOLD THE VICTIM DIED AT THE SCENE. POLICE HAVE NOT RELEASED THEIR IDENTITY AS OF YET. HAPPY TO BE HOME AFTER SPENDING THREE VERY DIFFICULT WEEKS HELPING VICTIMS OF TWO HURRICANES. ABOUT 20 MEMBERS OF A DISASTER MEDICAL TEAM FINALLY LANDED BACK IN BOSTON TODAY AFTER HELPING PEOPLE IN FLORIDA AND PUERTO RICO. Reporter: THEY LOOKED A LITTLE WEARY MAKING THEIR WAY TO BAGGAGE CLAIM AT LOGAN TODAY. GLAD TO BE HOME. Reporter: THIS IS D MATT MA2, A DISASTER MEDICAL ASSISTANCE TEAM WITH NURSES, EMTs AND OTHER MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS FROM MASSACHUSETTS. SOMETIMES IT’S A MEDICAL TEST, SOMETIMES IT’S AN EVACUATION TASK, SOMETIMES IT’S A NURSING TASK. Reporter: STARTING AT THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER IT WAS ALL THREE. THEY WENT TO FLORIDA FIRST TO HELP PEOPLE AFTER HURRICANE IRMA. AFTER EIGHT DAYS — WE WERE ACTUALLY PREPARING TO TURN AROUND AND COME BACK. Reporter: BUT THEN HURRICANE MARIA ROARED TOWARD PUERTO RICO SO THAT’S WHERE WE WENT NEXT ARRIVING JUST BEFORE THAT MONSTER STORM HIT. THIS VIDEO WAS TAKEN BY PARAMEDIC KEITH BENTLEY AS THEY HEADED FOR COVER IN SAN JUAN. THEN WE GOT TO ESSENTIALLY RIDE OUT THE STORM AND SHELTER IN PLACE IN A PARKING GARAGE OF ALL PLACES. THE CONDITIONS ARE DEVASTATING. Reporter: THEY WENT TO WORK SETTING UP A FIELD HOSPITAL IN THE PARKING LOT OF A TRAUMA CENTER IN SWAN. — SAN JUAN. TO TAKE THE EXTRA PATIENTS THAT MAY HAVE COME IN AND DECOMPRESS THEIR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT BY TAKING SOME PATIENTS THAT PROBABLY COULD HAVE GONE HOME HAD THEY A HOME TO GO TO. Reporter: THE TEAM WRAPPED UP ITS MISSION THIS WEEK AFTER DOING A LOT OF GOOD WORK. GLAD TO BE HERE. WELCOME BACK. WE HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE LOGISTICAL NIGHTMARES MOVING PEOPLE AND SUPPLIES AROUND PUERTO RICO. WELL, THE TEAM WAS ALSO AFFECTED. THEY HAD TO WAIT ABOUT FIVE DAYS BEFORE THEY COULD GET A FLIGHT TO TAKE THEM OFF THE ISLAND. REALLY HOPING THAT THERE WILL BE BIG IMPROVEMENT THERE
