First Aid Kits and Tips : Cleaning a Wound: First Aid for Minor Injuries

Hi! I’m Tracey Cullers on behalf of expertvillage.com.
In this segment, I’m going to show you how to cleanse a wound. It’s particularly difficult
when you have a child and they are panicking at the time they get hurt. You see a wound
that has so much dirt in it, you really want to cleanse it right away, that’s your natural
instinct. But to drag a kid kicking and screaming over to a shower or over to the sink is difficult.
So another way that you can do it is to fill up a basin with clean water and have them
hold their arm over the top of the basin. Before you start to touch anything, get some
gloves on. Hi! I’m Tracey Cullers on behalf of expertvillage.com.
In this segment, we’re going to talk about how to cleanse a wound. In case of a child,
this is the last thing that they want to do. Taking them kicking and screaming over to
a sink or a shower can be difficult. An alternate way that you can do is to get a basin full
of clean water. Just have them hold their hand gently over the top of the basin. Go
ahead and put gloves on. You never want to touch bodily fluids without gloves if they
are not your own. I recommend you keep a box of them handy. Then you hold their arm out
over the top of the basin and just pour clean water over top. If you notice all the dirt
doesn’t come off immediately, so take a clean washcloth and put a little bit of household
soap on it. You’re going to clean the skin around the wound. That will make everyone
feel better, to see it clean and less chance of dirt getting inside. The actual wound itself,
you don’t want to put the soap on. That will only irritate the wound. So you rinse
it. Before you bandage it, you want to just dry it off a little bit. Take a clean towel,
dry around the skin, around the wound, and then take a sterile gauze pad and gently blot
the wound. That’s the first step in taking care of a wound.

  1. I know the blood shown is this video is special effects make-up, when the first aid attendant rinsed the wound, the water emptied into the basin. After, she dipped a clean towel in the (dirty blood filled water,) (Wound will get contaminated further.) Then when she rinsed the soap off, she used that same dirty water in the basin. When she dried the wound she wiped all around it- wipe away from wound. Wiping around the wound like she did will contaminate the wound more.

  2. The bacteria & dirt will just go back into the wound. So what would be the point of even cleaning the wound in this case when you are actually making the wound worse? Finally you never dry a wound.

  3. lol. Ya, a pressure bandage/ ABD works great for severe bleeds. This is pretty minor. Wipe the excess blood away, leaves you with, most likely a minor laceration.

  4. lol, yes I know what that was like before I started doing first aid.

True, the sterile thing is good, but sometimes you have to improvise and make-do with what readily available materials you have. Are in any first aid organization? Red Cross? or something?

  5. aww wow 25. That's alot. But, everything will most likely work out for the best. This stuff just takes time. Sometimes, alot.

  6. Ok i fell from a stick going thro my foot and its been 4 days since and the wound turned white is that bad? and the wound is about an inch deep what should i do? Its between my small toe and my 2 to last toe where the seaperation is.

  7. Waaait, you rinse it, and then you're allowed to rinse it again with he SAME WATER? You're just taking the all the crap you rinsed off and slathering it all over the wound again.

  8. @WinyanStaz Why are you on this video if you've been doing this for 40 years?

And at one point she rinses the girls arm, and then puts the cup into the SAME pool that she rinsed into and rinses again. Isn't that just dumping all the dirt you washed off back onto the wound? I can't see why you wouldn't use a faucet instead. Please enlighten me?
