‘First Aid Ladies Make First Aid Sexy’ Viral Video Causes Controversy

A PSA THAT IS PLAYING IN
GERMANY AND HAS GONE VIRAL IS GETTING A LOT OF HEAT BECAUSE OF
THE FACT THAT MANY FEEL THAT IT OVERLY SEXUALIZED HIS WOMEN,
AND HAVE A SEXIST MESSAGE. THE AD IS ALL ABOUT HOW THE
COUNTRY NEEDS MORE PEOPLE TRAINED IN FIRST AID. PROBABLY THE MOST BORING TOPIC
THAT YOU COULD EVER WATCH A PSA ON; HOWEVER, THEY TRIED TO
SELL IT WITH BOOBY’S. YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME? TAKE A LOOK. [GERMAN SONG] I KIND OF FEEL LIKE FOX NEWS
RIGHT NOW WHERE YOU ARE LIKE, IT IS OUTRAGEOUS, THEY ARE
OVERLY SEXUALIZING WOMEN, IT’S DISGUSTING, LET’S
WATCH ONE MINUTE OF IT. LET ME GIVE YOU SOME MORE
DETAILS OF THIS. NOT ONLY ARE THEY USING SEX IN
ORDER TO SELL THIS AND CATCH PEOPLE’S ATTENTION, THEY
ARE OBVIOUSLY TRYING TO SPOOF VERY POPULAR MUSIC VIDEOS. LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT. THAT WAS ROBIN THICKE’S BLURRED LINES. TAYLOR SWIFT’S SHAKE IT
OFF BECOMES BEND THE HEAD. FIRST OF ALL, THERE’S THE
CALMEST GERMAN VIDEO I’VE EVER SEEN. WE ALL KNOW YOUR PORN HABITS. THE QUESTION IS, IS THIS THE
RIGHT WAY TO GET AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE OUT THERE? WHERE YOU OBVIOUSLY USE WOMEN IN
A SEXUAL NATURE IN ORDER TO SELL SOMETHING? GOOD CONTROVERSY. WE SHOULD DO A POLL ON
OUR APP, IS IT SEXIST? I VOTE NO, I’M CURIOUS WHAT
YOU THINK. IF YOU NOTICE, IT WASN’T JUST
WOMEN, THE GUYS WERE ALSO HOT. THE GUY HAD A SIX-PACK,
THEY EMPHASIZE THAT. IF THE ROLES WERE REVERSED, HOT
MEN WERE GIVING LITTLE OLD LADIES CPR, YEAH, IT CATCHES
PEOPLES ATTENTION. PEOPLE ARE SAYING YOU ARE
SEXUALIZING WOMEN, THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE. I DO NOT THINK IT IS
UNACCEPTABLE TO SEXUALIZED WOMEN, I THINK IT IS
UNACCEPTABLE TO SEXUALIZE WOMEN IN CERTAIN CONTEXTS. I THINK THE SAME THING FOR MEN,
IT DEPENDS ON THE CONTEXT. I ACTUALLY DO AGREE WITH YOU. I COME FROM THE BRAND OF
FEMINISM WHERE, AS LONG AS THERE IS CONSENT, AND THE WOMEN IN A
VERY SPECIFIC CONTEXT ARE WANTING TO DO IT, THEN
WHY IS IT SEXIST? THESE WOMEN ARE PROBABLY
MODELS AND ACTRESSES, AND HE CONSENTED TO DOING THIS. SOME FEMINISTS DISAGREE WITH ME,
THEY THINK IT SENDS A BAD MESSAGE TO WOMEN, I GET THAT,
BUT YOU CANNOT START TELLING WOMEN WHAT THEY CAN AND
CANNOT DO, I THINK THAT KIND OF GOES AGAINST WHAT FEMINISM
IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION
IS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THIS IS THE RIGHT WAY TO GET AN
IMPORTANT MESSAGE OUT THERE, AND REMEMBER WE HAD A DISCUSSION
ABOUT THIS WHEN IT CAME TO THE I LOVE BOOBIES CAMPAIGN FOR BREAST CANCER. AT SOME POINT, OVER SEXUALIZING
SOMETHING COULD ACTUALLY DISTRACTS FROM THE MESSAGE. THIS DID NOT ENCOURAGE ME TO
LEARN CPR, IT JUST WAS AN ENTERTAINING THING TO LOOK AT. I WOULD HAVE WATCHED IT
TWICE, AND MAYBE LEARN SOMETHING ACCIDENTALLY. APPARENTLY ONLY SEVENTY
PERCENT START TO USE CPR WHEN SOMEBODY THAT DOUBLED PUBLIC. IN NEIGHBORING HOLLAND,
SIXTY PERCENT DO THAT. OBVIOUSLY THEY ARE EDUCATING
PEOPLE IN HOLLAND A LOT BETTER THAN THEY ARE IN
GERMANY ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. I DON’T KNOW IF THEY DID IT WITH
HOT DUTCH GIRLS IN HOLLAND, BUT THEY’RE GETTING PEOPLE TO PAY ATTENTION TO IT, I
THINK THAT IS FINE. THE BOOBIES CAMPAIGN WITH BREAST
CANCER, THAT NEVER MADE ANY SENSE TO ME, BECAUSE IT IS
GOING TO GET YOUNG GUYS TO BE LIKE, LET ME CHECK OUT THE
BREASTS, BUT THEY’RE NOT THE ONES YOU NEED TO SCREEN
THEMSELVES, FOR THEY ARE HITTING THE WRONG DEMOGRAPHICS. THINK ABOUT THE WOMEN WHO HAD
TO UNDERGO A DOUBLE MASTECTOMY BECAUSE THEY
HAD BREAST CANCER, AND NAC THAT CAMPAIGN, IT PROBABLY
DOESN’T SEND THE RIGHT MESSAGE. BY THINK IF YOU ARE TEACHING
PEOPLE IN GENERAL ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF FIRST AID, YOU CAN
DO THAT WHILE THEY ARE IN SCHOOL. BUT THEY HAD HEALTH CLASSES? ISN’T THAT WHAT WE SHOULD USE
HEALTH CLASSES FOR? I KNOW, BUT I LEARNED IT IN
HEALTH CLASS AND I’M NOT SURE IN THE CASE OF EMERGENCY
THAT I CAN DO IT RIGHT NOW. BUT THAT VIDEO IS IN ENGLISH
AND I WATCHED IT A COUPLE TIMES, MAYBE I COULD. I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TAKING UP
WHEN YOU’RE WATCHING THE VIDEO. THAT’S NOT WHAT I’M THINKING. YOU WERE PROBABLY THINKING ñ GIVE ME A BREAK. I HAD A VERY NEUTRAL REACTION. I AM WONDERING IF IT IS
GOING TO BE EFFECTIVE. IF YOU ARE USING SEX” ñ POP CULTURE TO SELL SOMETHING,
YOU COME ACROSS AS CHEAP. AT SOME POINT, SEX BECOMES A
DISTRACTION MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE. ANA, I THINK THOSE BREASTS
SAVE LIVES, AND I’M IN FAVOR OF SAVING LIVES.

  1. If everyone in the video didn't have a problem(since they were the ones in the video) then it shouldn't be a big deal. If you don't like it then don't watch it, it's really that simple.

  2. I thought this video was about ladies who had aids and they were saying that they are still sexy and was talking about safe sex. o.o
(I can't read to save my life. v.v)

  3. Germany, a much more sexually liberated that the USA, does a sexy PSA. It's not sexist to acknowledge human sexuality.

  4. german mode on: I have never seen this videos, they aren't popular here at all.
And I don't think that this video is bad. Here no one talks about those videos. And to the numbers Cenk mentioned: ok, the numbers of Germans doing first aid might not be great, but to complain about that if your from a country where you are told not to do first aid becourse you could get sued for if the person dies might be a little shallow.
and weather this video helps or not, at least they tried.

  5. Americans lack a sense of humour, part of the reason they became a third world country over the past 15 years. Don't get me wrong, they are probably the leading nation of the third world, for now.

  6. Considering women are born to be sexy…. what woman wouldn't want to be seen that way? They decided to become models. Western culture empowers woman to earn a living being hot and yet other women hate them for it. So sad…

  7. I agree with Cenk's point about it not being sexist and over-sexualizing. I was going to comment about how first aid should be taught to a degree in school. Especially here in the US where all we learn about is abstinence and other bs shit. I am CPR certified and its a great feeling knowing i shit goes down I can help someone or stabilize them till paramedics come.

  8. Being sexual or sexualised (consensual) isn't sexist outright. TYT are right, its about context. When you starting looking down on people who are sexual or only treating one gender unfairly for being sexual, that is sexist.

  9. I admit…I watched more of the video (mostly sound off because the lyrics suck) and I did indeed remember a few things I was unsure about what do for first aid.

  10. translation from a german viewer: in the second part, when the guy is passed out, she sings…
"you drank way too much (…) or did you have some ectasy, dropped some shrooms ; are you comatose or will you wake up again?"

  11. As humans, sex an sexualization is natural. We should disregard the gnats who have a problem with this PSA and who want us to be more like robots.

  12. Germany has bare titties on billboards for radio stations and nightly porn on channel 4. This is only offensive to Americans who are uncomfortable with the human body.

  13. In contrast to the original music video the women are shown to be in control. That's what makes Americans uneasy.

  14. How do you block an account? I am sick and tired of The Young Turks showing up in my feed.
It usually looks like an interesting topic, only to click on it and discover, to my horror, that it's these two assholes talking about it.

  15. I'm so sorry, that Clip (which I by now have only stumbled upon thanks to you) is simply crappy. And I thought the ASB would do better… Plus it's not typical for usual German ads approach.
    Greetz from Germany

  16. I don't care if it's sexist. The people who are going to make a big deal about it are the same people that believe facts and logic are misogynistic.

  17. Its not even American so who cares lol, I don't see anyone going to Arabia and protesting against the sexism there, so stfu about this retarded ad (which isn't sexist at all) 🙂

  18. I am a German lifeguard and a paramedic. And I agree with everything that raises the awareness to learn a little bit first aid. It is so frustrating to come to a scene where somebody could be saved if someone had started a cpr. One of the basic first aid technics. Most of the time this happens because they do not really know what they are supposed to do.. I personally think that anything that could lead to more knowledge in the field is positive. And that tyt talk about it shows that at least the topic is back on the table. So I think it is a great campaign and as a girl I don't really feel objectified because of it.

  19. In the Netherlands many people get first aid in high school, it is required for (sports) clubs and businesses to have people with a first aid certificate and a lot of foundations (red cross, heart foundation) are very visible and push for CPR classes. There are serious adds on TV and they often represent the people helping as heroes. Everybody wants to be hero.
That German add looks like satire.

  20. the ONLY reason people find this sexiest is Beacuse tumblr told them too. My main thing is holy shit there are still black people in Germany? shit I'm going there

  21. So if one person remembers what to do and saves a life because of this stupid video because it offended them, it would be worth it , right?! If the same person remembered something that saved a life because they had giggled at the guy in a leotard demonstrating a defibrillator that's wrong?

  22. The only problem is that they sexualized first aid lol. They are just doing what they know will get peoples attention and sex always gets peoples attention. When you complain about companies using sex to sell or in this case educate, remember they wouldn't do it if it didn't work most of the time so consumers take some responsibility lol.

  23. I have no problem with those ads. The lyrics are silly but guess what I'm sure they got stuck in people's heads and captured their attention.
And no…not only females are sexualized in media.

  24. I'm just blown away hardcore "modern" feminists get so worked up over stuff like that but you never hear them about women getting raped and stoned to death in third world countries….Get your priorities right, ladies.

  25. I agree with Ana on this one I reacted pretty neutrally but I'm not sure it will help their cause much

  26. First time i hear about this as a German, the reason? We don't give a shit, seriously please keep your feminazis out of here, we don't need them.

  27. Omg, finally. I agree with everything they said here especially Ana. I'm not thrilled she identify as a feminist caz all feminist sees woman as victims, but I'm happy about ana's position in this story.

  28. Several first aid courses are already mandatory in Germany. I don't know what's the AD for?
My son (17) also made first aid training for his youth group leader card. He will do another first aid course before starting training for his drivers licence.
A first aid course is mandatory in many occasions in Germany.
I think the ad only helps the producers.

  29. Hey they wanted more people trained in first aid they thought hey do this admittedly cheesy PSA to get people to watch I personally don't see an issue

  30. Is it sexist? No… only if you homogenize individuals and start interacting with "the idea of women" instead of the women in front of you, can this calibur of shit actually be harmful. But I'd blame the people interacting with their surroundings on a marxist level even more.

Is it the best way to sell your message? Not at all. Some kind of confused pop culture reference with girls doing sexy poses vaguely hinting at first aid procedure? Just looks like badly acted nurse fetish shit to me.

You want to use sexy women to sell first aid? Target men. Hype up how saving someone's life makes you super cool and desireable. Sexy girls like heroic men. Look, sexy girls, don't you want them? Done. (Still lazy and sleazy, but it'd work better than this)

  31. So, both sides of the sexism debate are watching this… as well as other neutral peoples, which means the P.S.A. is getting Lots of attention and views. Isn't that the point?

  32. I agree with Ana, it's not sexist to be sexy with consent, like that video. We're human beings, we shouldn't be ashamed of our sexuality, and it's healthy to have an interest in sexy stuff. As someone who's worked in advertising, I just wonder what the brief was, what's the point, how is this campaign more effective than another approach? It seems a bit tacky, because it seems lazy. I can't speak the language, so I can't tell if it's well written.

But if their goal was to court controversy, and through that, raise awareness, then they nailed it.

  33. At the end of the day, what works better? Is it more important to not sexualize people, or for more people to be trained to save lives?

Also, keep it in context. This is a German add. Germans aren't really are as uptight about sexually as Americans.

  34. Wasn't sexist at all, but if one wants to argue it was, why was the only topless person in the video a guy, who was obviously being taken advantage of by the clothed woman.

  35. Anyway, this video gives a comprehensive tutorial to all who may experience an emergency situation without knowing how to react. Thumbs up! Guess who may watching it? I'll tell you: people who normally does NOT care about it. And thanks this way maybe someone learned something. So what about a couple of nice looking girls? Complaining about, well, THIS is silly!

  36. omg now this is even being discussed in the states. I am a feminist, but I don't think this is sexist at all! At least some people see how to do CPR again, because that's the important thing here. Sure they are fighting over the video, but at least you learn something while watching it and if you would watch the whole video than you would definitely learn something.

  37. This short clip may have saved lifes. No matter about how it was performed. All crap about bigot 'sexism' should be ignored at least as some more stupid statements concerning no useful messages at all, just to catch viewers…
