Inclusive Graphic Medicine | Midday at the Oasis (August 21, 2019)

TEST. TEST. TEST. TEST. >> YOU CAN FORWARD YOUR QUESTIONS AFTER THE SESSION DUE TO SCHEDULING ISSUES. THE MLE/CE EVALUATION SURVEY WILL BE POST THAT’D END OF THE SESSION AND YOU CAN GO FULL SCREEN TO ENHANCE VIEWING OF THE SLIDES. LIVE CAPTIONING IS AVAILABLE AND MARCO WILL PUT THE URL IN THE CHAT BOX. WE HAVE AN EXCITING PRESENTATION TODAY ON INCLUSIVE GRAPHIC MEDICINE, COMMUNICATION, COLLECTIONS AND COMMUNITY WITH THREE PRESENTERS. KATHRYN HOUK AND ELISA CORTEZ FROM UNIVERSITY RIVERSIDE AND JERRY KAUPPILA FROM UCLA. STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT MIDDAY WHICH WILL BE UPCOMING. THE PLANNING WILL BE UPCOMING AND WE’LL SEND MESSAGES ON THE LIST SERVE ONCE IT’S BEEN SCHEDULED. THE NEXT NLM RESOURCE PICK IS SEPTEMBER 25 AND THE SUBJECT IS FINDING CLINICALLY RELEVANT GENETIC INFORMATION. NOW, ON TO OUR PROGRAM. KATHRYN HOUK IS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA LAS VEGAS HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY AND BEGAN DRAFTING A MEDICINE DATABASE. IS CURRENTLY IN A MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH DEGREE PROGRAM CONCENTRATING IN COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION WITH A HOPE OF EVENTUALLY FURTHERING THE RESEARCH USE OF COMICS AS A HEALTH LITERACY TOOL. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US TODAY, KATHRYN. >> THANK YOU. THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR JOINING US TODAY. I APOLOGIZE AFTER I PRESENT I HAVE TO SWITCH IMMEDIATELY OVER INTO ANOTHER MEETING ANY QUESTIONS WILL BE SENT TO ME AFTER THE PRESENTATION AND YOU’RE FREE AND WELCOME TO E-MAIL ME DIRECTLY. MY E-MAIL ADDRESS WILL APPEAR AT THE END OF MY PRESENTATION. SO I’M HERE TO GIVE YOU BACKGROUND ABOUT COMICS IN HEALTH SETTINGS. THE AGENDA IS WE’RE GOING TO LEARN A TINY BIT ABOUT COMICS, DEFINE GRAPHIC MEDICINE, LEARN ANOTHER TINY BIT ABOUT HOW GRAPHIC MEDICINE SUPPORTS PATIENTS AND HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AND THEN WE’LL WORK ON A LITTLE REFLECTION ACTIVITY. WE’LL TRY TO GET IT IN A WHIRLWIND 30 MINUTES SO BEAR WITH ME. SO WHAT ARE COMICS EXACTLY? A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLE WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT COMICS FOR USE IN SCIENCE OR HEALTH OR EDUCATION, THEY THINK THAT THEY ARE IMAGES USED TO ILLUSTRATE TEXT, THAT THEY’RE JUST CARTOONS, THAT THEY’RE DRAWINGS WITHOUT IMPLIED ACTION OR DATA VISUALIZATIONS AND COMICS ARE ACTUALLY NONE OF THOSE. COMICS SPECIFICALLY NEED TO BE BE SEQUENTIAL ART THAT TELL A STORY. THEY’RE TYPICALLY NOT ANIMATE AND THEY’RE A COMBINATION OF VISUAL AND TEXT INFORMATION. SO WITHOUT THAT TELLING A STORY ASPECT AND HAVING SEQUENTIAL ART PIECES IN A ROW, IT’S NOT REALLY A COMIC. AND COMICS HAVE UNIQUE FEATURES. CAN SEE MOST INDIVIDUAL DRAWINGS HAPPEN WITHIN A PANEL OR A FRAME AND THEN BETWEEN FRAMES OR PANELS ARE SOMETHING CALLED THE GOODER. THIS IS IMPORTANT IN COMIC SCHOLARSHIP AND IT IMPLIES THERE’S ACTION HAPPENING BETWEEN THE TWO PANELS SO THE READER IS FORCED TO FILL IN THE BLANKS. WE THINK THIS IS ACTUALLY PART OF THE PROCESS OF WHY COMICS ARE GOOD FOR LEARNING BECAUSE A READER IS FORCED TO FILL OUT THE REST OF THE STORE THEY’RE FORCED TO THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENING. OTHER TERMINOLOGY, NARRATION OR VOICEOVER BOX WHERE A CHARACTER ISN’T SPEAKING BUT YOU HAVE CONTEXT IN TEXT. YOU HAVE VOICE BOX AND HAVE THOUGHT BALLOONS. SO SPEAKING BALLOONS AND THOUGHT BALLOONS. THEN THE OTHER VERY IMPORTANT PIECE IS THIS IDEA OF EMANATA. THESE ARE SYMBOLS. THEY REPRESENT KIND OF FEELINGS OR ACTIONS OF THE CHARACTERS IN THE COMIC. SO THAT’S ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT TERM FOR COMICS. SO WHY ARE COMICS SPECIAL? BECAUSE THEY CAN COMBINE NARRATIVE WITH ART. SO IT’S AN EXPLICIT EXPRESSION, WHAT A CHARACTER IS SAYING OR ANY SORT OF INFORMATION IMPLIED WITH A NARRATIVE VOICEOVER WITH ABSTRACT EXPRESSION. THE ARTISTIC ELEMENTS. IT PROVIDES AN APPROACHABILITY TO INFORMATION THAT ISN’T THERE IN JUST TEXT. AND IT PROVIDES CONNECTION AND EMOTIONAL IMPACT FOR THE READER. IF YOU SEE THE COMIC I HAVE PORTRAYED, YOU CAN SEE REALITY. THERE’S A PHYSICIAN TALKING TO THE MOTHER OF THE PATIENT BEING FACTUAL AND IN THEIR HEAD, THIS IS WHAT’S GOING ON. THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE INTERPRETING AS HAPPENING. YOU CAN SEE HOW THEY’RE FEELINGS ARE INFLUENCING THE INFORMATION THEY’RE RETRIEVING. AND COMICS ARE ROOTED IN UNDERGROUND MOVEMENTS AND EXPRESS FROM THE PERCEIVED NORM. THEY’RE A GOOD VEHICLE FOR TALKING ABOUT HEALTH ISSUES AS WELL. THEN THERE’S THIS IDEA COMICS CAN HELP IN REDUCING STIGMA. COMICS AND INDIE COMICS VALUE THE ABILITY TO REPRESENT WITHOUT FEAR. THERE WAS AN UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT IN THE ’60s THAT WAS KIND OF AGAINST THIS IDEA OF A COMICS PUBLICATION KIND OF ORGANIZATION THAT ONLY ALLOWED PUBLISHED MAINSTREAM COMICS TO BE IN THE VAIN OF WHOLESOME FAMILY SUPER HEROES AND THAT STIGMA ABOUT WHAT COMICS ARE AND WHAT THEY CAN BE ABOUT HOLDS TODAY. IF YOU SAY THE WORD COMICS, MOST PEOPLE THINK SUPER HERO OR SOMETHING FLUFFY AND THERE’S NOT A LOT OF CONTENT TO IT BUT ACTUALLY THERE’S BEEN AN UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT JUST AS LONG WHERE COMICS HAVE BEEN USED TO PORTRAY HARD TOPICS. THIS IS BECAUSE THE YOU IN THE COMIC CAN BE REPRESENTED HOWEVER THE ARTIST WISHES. THEY COULD BE HUMAN OR A SHAPE OR A PIECE OF FOOD OR ANIMAL. AND ALSO THEY CAN BE REPRESENTED HOWEVER THE ARTIST WISHES. SO WHATEVER THE ANTAGONIST, IF IT’S A SYSTEM, IT COULD BE MADE INTO LIKE A ROBOT AS HOW IT’S PORTRAYED IN THE COMIC SO IT GIVES IT AGENCY RATHER THAN JUST LIKE A PASSIVE SYSTEM. SO THIS CAN HELP REDUCE STIGMA OR REPERCUSSIONS FROM BEING RECOGNIZED. SO SOMEONE CAN EASILY DRAW THEMSELVES AS A RABBIT AND USE A PSEUDONYM AND THIS IDENTIFIED HOW A NEW RESIDENT FEELS ON THEIR FIRST DAY AND HE’S SORT OF POKING FUN AT THE CULTURE OF RESIDENTS FEELING LIKE THEY KNOW EVERYTHING AS SOON AS THEY GRADUATE FROM FOURTH YEAR AND START THEIR RESIDENCY PROGRAM. SO WE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT COMICS BUT WHAT IS GRAPHIC MEDICINE SPECIFICALLY. ACCORDING TO A GRAPHIC MEDICINE MANIFESTO A BOOK REFERENCED IN THE LAST PRESENTATION IT’S THE INTERSECTION OF THE MEDIUM OF COMICS AND DISCOURSE OF HEALTH CARE. I REALLY LIKE THIS BROAD DEFINITION. YOU CAN FIND MORE SPECIFIC ONES BUT I LIKE THIS ONE BECAUSE IT LEAVES IT OPEN TO WHATEVER HEALTH CARE MAY BE. IT MAY BE A STORY OF YOUR OWN PERSONAL ILLNESS BUT IT MAY JUST BE A STORY ABOUT HOW PEOPLE ARE STRUGGLING TO ACCESS CARE OR THE COST OF CARE SO IT’S ANYTHING RELATED TO HEALTH CARE AS TOLD THROUGH COMICS. SO WHY IS GRAPHIC MEDICINE POPULAR OR EVEN JUST COMICS? THERE’S AN APPROACHABILITY TO INFORMATION THAT IT HAS. IT CAN BE MADE TO BE CHILD FRIENDLY. THEY’RE LESS INTIMIDATING THAN AN OFFICIAL FLYER OR BROCHURE THAT DOESN’T HAVE A STORY ASPECT TO IT AND PROVIDES AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION AND IMPACT TO THE READER THAT JUST A PURE INFORMATIONAL FLYER WOULD HAVE. THEY CAN PROVIDE A COMPANION OR GUIDE FOR THOSE EXPERIENCE SIMILAR HEALTH ISSUE. SO YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GIVE A COMIC ABOUT DEALING WITH AN AUTISTIC CHILD TO A PARENT WHO JUST NEWLY HAD THEIR CHILD DIAGNOSED AND HELP FEEL THEM LESS ALONE AND RECOGNIZE ISSUES THAT COME UP AND WE KNOW STORIES AND NARRATIVE ARE BETTER FOR CONNECTION, EMPATHY, RETENTION OF INFORMATION AND OVERALL UNDERSTANDING. PROVIDING INFORMATION ON A COMIC FORM ALLOWS IT TO BE TOLD AS A STORY. COMICS CAN ALSO BE LOW-LITERACY FRIENDLY BECAUSE OF THE COMBINATION OF PICTURES AND WORDS. USUALLY YOU’RE USING SHORTER WORDS, BRIEFER PHRASES AND MORE NATURAL SPOKEN LANGUAGE THAN MORE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE THAN A HANDOUT OR FLIER. SO ANYTHING ON THIS SLIDE THAT IS IN ITALICS IS THE NAME OF AN ARTICLE. SO GRAPHIC MEDICINE IN TERMS OF HOW IT CAN HELP THE PUBLIC WITH HEALTH LITERACY THERE’S ARTICLES LOOKING AT THE POTENTIAL OF ITS USE AS A HEALTH CARE INFORMATION MEDIUM. THERE IS A PUBLISHER CALLED BOOSTER SHOT MEDIA. IT’S JUST A DOCTOR AND A PUBLIC HEALTH PERSON CALLED A COMIC CALLED IGGY AND THE INHALERS ABOUT ASTHMA AND WHEN DID A STUDY THEY FOUND ASTHMA KNOWLEDGE INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY AFTER THE COMIC AND THE INFORMATION WAS RETAINED AT THE ONE-MONTH FOLLOW-UP. THAT’S WHAT’S IMPORTANT ABOUT THIS STUDY. A LOT OF INTERVENTIONS WORK RIGHT AFTER YOU TEST AND AFTER YOU DO THE INTERVENTION AND TEST IMMEDIATELY THEY SHOW AN IMPROVEMENT BUT IT’S THE LONG-TERM RETENTION THAT’S HARDER TO GET SO IT’S AN EXCITING STUDY TO SHOW COMICS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO ALLOW FOR KNOWLEDGE RETENTION. THERE’S STUDIES USING COMICS FOR INFORMED CONSENT BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT’S VERY IMPORTANT IN RESEARCH AND MEDICINE BUT MANY PEOPLE WITH LOWER LITERACY OR COGNITIVE ABILITIES MAY FIND IT HARDER TO UNDERSTAND WHAT’S BEING SAID AND COGNITIVE NARRATIVES CAN HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN TO THEM AND WHAT THEY’RE AGREEING TO. THERE’S AN ELEMENT OF BEING ABLE TO BE MORE CULTURALLY SENSITIVE. YOU CAN TELL STORIES THAT RESONATE WITH THE POPULATION YOU’RE TRYING TO FOCUS ON. COMICS ARE EASIER TO GET PEOPLE ENGAGED WITH. THEY DON’T SEEM AS STUFFY OR UNATTAINABLE AS WRITING OUT SOMETHING IN FULL PARAGRAPH FORMAT. AND IT CAN ALSO HELP IMPROVEMENT PATIENT/PROVIDER INTERACTIONS. LIKE I SAID FOR A PHYSICIAN WHO HAS A COMIC AVAILABLE ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE CHILD IS NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM IT MAY HAVE A PERSON COME BACK WITH RELEVANT QUESTIONS THEY MAY NOT HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT WITHOUT THE INFORMATION SO LOTS OF WAYS TO HELP WITH THE PATIENT SIDE. AGAIN, THE IDEA OF REDUCING STIGMA. MANY OF THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE NOVELS ARE ILLNESS NARRATIVES AND ALLOWS PATIENT TO SHOW DIFFERENT PATHOLOGIES. THREE DIFFERENT WAYS IAN WILLIAMS SHOWS ARE MANIFEST WHICH ARE SIGNS AND SCARS. THEY’RE VISIBLE ON THE BODY. CONCEALED. HEALTH CONDITIONS THAT ARE INTERMITTENT OR YOU CAN’T NOTICE BY CASUALLY OBSERVING. YOU’D HAVE TO KNOW THE PERSON AND OBSERVE THEM OVER TIME OR INVISIBLE WHICH INCLUDES MENTAL HEALTH AND SEVERAL CHRONIC INVISIBLE DISEASES AND THESE ARE CURRENT GRAPHIC MEDICINE TITLES. THAT’S BECAUSE COMICS HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE WHAT IS NORMALLY INVISIBLE VISIBLE THROUGH THE THINGS THROUGH EMANATA, THOUGHT BUBBLES AND VOICE NARRATION AND SO ARTISTS CAN CHOOSE HOW TO PRESENT THEIR ILLNESS AND THAT INFLUENCES HOW THE READER PERCEIVES THE ILLNESS AND THIS IS CALLED THE ICONOGRAPHY OF ILLNESS. WHEN HAVE YOU SEVERAL PEOPLE WRITING ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH THEIR ILLNESSES AND CHOOSING WHAT TO HIGHLIGHT ABOUT THEIR JOURNEYS IT CAN HELP DECREASE THE STIGMA AROUND
A DISEASE OR DIAGNOSIS. SO GRAPHIC MEDICINE CAN ALSO BE BENEFICIAL FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS. THERE’S BENEFITS TO CREATING AND READING COMICS. IN TERMS OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDICAL PRACTICE, IT’S BELIEVED THE ACTIVE READING OF COMIC IS SIMILAR TO THE ART OF DIAGNOSIS. THEY MUST PIECE TOGETHER INFORMATION AND GUTTERS PROVIDE GAPS IN ACTION IN FILLING IN WHAT HAPPENS AND JUST LIKE DIAGNOSES YOU GET PIECES OF THE PUZZLE YOU HAVE TO PUT TOGETHER YOURSELF AND TO PROVIDE MORE EMPATHETIC AND ETHICAL PROVIDERS ONE SUGGESTION IS PATHOGRAPHIES THAT GIVE INSIDE INTO DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE ILLNESS. IN THE PRE-CLINICAL YEARS IT HELPS STUDENTS REMEMBER THEY’RE TRYING TO MASTER SOMETHING TO HELP REAL PEOPLE AND BRINGS A REALITY TO PEOPLE’S PERCEIVED EXPERIENCE AND IT REENFORCES THAT HEALING IS NOT JUST ABOUT TREAT BODY AND CUTTING SOMEBODY UP AND DOING SURGERY BUT ABOUT ME WHOLE PERSON AND THEIR WHOLE LIFE IS AFFECTED WHEN THEY HAVE AN ILLNESS. THEN CREATING COMICS CAN BE AN ACT OF REFLECTION AND WELLNESS. IT CAN PROVIDE A CATHARSIS AND CAN BE STRESS RELIEVING AND HELP MAKE MEANING OF SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED HOME TO UP THEIR DAY TO DAY LIVES. ONE QUOTE LIKE IT IS I FELT SAD AND ANXIOUS AND ASHAMED THAT MORNING AS I SAT BEFORE A BLANK WHITE PIECE OF PAPER HELPING MYSELF LOOK AT FEELINGS AND THIS IS BY A COMIC NURSE AND IN HER GRAPHIC MEDICINE MANIFESTO IN WHAT DREW HER TO WRITING COMICS. BEFORE SHE HAD DONE A LOT OF ART TO HELP HER MOOD AND WELLNESS BUT ONCE IT BECAME APPARENT HER AIDS WARD WAS CLOSING SHE HAD A TANGLE OF EMOTION AND A COMIC HELP HER REFLECT ON HER EXPERIENCES. IT HELPED GET HER THROUGH THAT TIME IN HER LIFE. I HAVE A LITTLE EXERCISE FOR US ALL. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY IN THE CHAT BOX OR VOLUNTEER TO ANSWER AND SAY I VOLUNTEER IN THE CHAT BOX AND WE’LL UNMUTE YOU SO YOU CAN SPEAK, BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK IS HAPPENING IN THIS PICTURE? DO YOU THINK IT’S TAKING PLACE IN REALITY? CAN YOU DESCRIBE COMIC OR VISUAL ELEMENTS THE CREATOR MAKES USE OF. I LISTED SOME TERMS WE TALKED ABOUT AND SOME WE DIDN’T TALK ABOUT BUT ARE RELATED TO VISUAL ART SUCH AS BALANCE, SYMMETRY AND WHITE SPACE AND FILLED SPACE. TAKE A MOMENT, LOOK AT THE PICTURE, REFLECT ON WHAT IT SAYS TO YOU OR WHAT YOU THINK IS GOING ON AND THEN IF YOU’D LIKE TO ANSWER , LET US KNOW. HALL SAYS SOMEONE IS IN TROUBLE. NOT IN CONTROL. THE LAKE IS THE FEAR. I SEA A LOT OF CHAOS AND BEING RIPPED AWAY. WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING IN THE PICTURE? OKAY, THE BROKE ROPE IS A LOSS OF STABILITY AND JANICE NOTICED THIS WHOLE MASS OF STUFF THAT’S HAPPENING ON THE RIGHT SIDE IS ACTUALLY EMANATING FROM A THOUGHT BUBBLE. WHEN I LOOK AT THIS, LEFT PANEL IS CALM, RIGHT PANEL IS CHAOS. WHY? BECAUSE THERE’S A LOT OF STUFF HAPPENING IN A SHORT TIME FRAME. IT’S ALL PILED IN ON ONE SIDE. IT GIVES A LOOMING FEEL. MY LAST SLIDE IS WITH THE WORDS BACK ON THERE. MY PLATELET LEVEL AND AFTER I FELT LIKE I SURFACED I HAD TO MOVE TO A NEW MEDICATION AND MY MOOD LIFTED AND LIFTED AND DIDN’T STOP LIFTING. I COULD FEEL MYSELF GETTING SWEPT AWAY. SO DOES THE TEXT PROVIDE ANYTHING THE IMAGE ALONE COULD NOT? CONTEXT. SO NOW THAT YOU HAVE THE MEDICAL CONDITION IT PROVIDES MEDICATION INFORMATION. IT PROVIDES REFERENCE TO WHAT THEY’RE TRYING TO SHOW HAPPENING. SO WE KNEW THEY’RE SLIPPING INTO CHAOS AND LOSING CONTROL BUT IT’S ABOUT SPECIFICALLY THEIR MOOD, RIGHT? SO IF THERE WAS NO IMAGERY HOW DO YOU THINK THE AUTHOR WOULD HAVE TO WRITE THIS IN TEXT? PARAGRAPHS OF TEXT. WHY DO YOU THINK THERE WOULD NEED TO BE PARAGRAPHS OF TEXT? LOTS OF FEELINGS TO DESCRIBE, YES. YOU’D HAVE TO ACTUALLY VERBALLY DESCRIBE THAT GETTING SWEPT AWAY AND HOW MUCH. LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF TEXTUAL DESCRIPTION WOULD HAVE TO OCCUR TO GET THE SAME VISUAL IMPACT. SO I FEEL LIKE THIS IS A REALLY GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW THE VISUAL IMAGERY REALLY DOES A LOT IN A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME FOR UNDERSTANDING HOW THE MAIN CHARACTER FEELS IN AN INSTANT. AND THIS IS ACTUALLY FROM ELLEN AND THIS IS ABOUT HER TRYING TO KEEP AWAY A BOUT OF MANIA WHEN SHE SWITCHES. A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS, INDEED. THAT’S REALLY ALL I HAVE FOR AN INTRODUCTION FOR WHAT GRAPHIC MEDICINE IS AND HOW COMICS CAN HELP US AS PATIENTS AND PROVIDERS CONNECT HOLISTICALLY WITH AN ILLNESS OR PROBLEM. TO PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO E-MAIL ME AT THE E-MAIL ADDRESS IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR WANT TO CONTINUE A CONVERSATION. AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. >> THANK YOU FOR JOINING US TODAY, KATHRYN. I’M NOW GOING TO PASS THE BALL TO ELISA CORTEZ WHO WILL BE OUR NEXT PRESENTER. ELISA CORTEZ IS THE CLINICAL OUTREACH LIBRARY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE. SHE’S THE CURRENT PRESIDENT OF THE MEDICAL LIBRARY GROUP OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA. A CHAPTER OF THE MEDICAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION AND HAS OVER 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AS A MEDICAL AND DENTAL LIBRARIAN AND IS A CALIFORNIA NATIVE. THANK YOU, ELISA. >> SO A LITTLE BIT WHERE I’M AT AND LOCATED EMBEDDED WITH THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE WITH THE MEDICAL CLINICAL OUTREACH LIBRARIAN AND WANTED TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE AS A NOVICE TO GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND PROMOTING AND LEARNING HOW TO ENGAGE WITH THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COLLECTION AS WE STARTED HERE AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE. SO A BIT OF AN ORIGIN STORY AND WHERE THE CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF RIVERSIDE IS LOCATE. WE’RE SOUTHEAST OF LOS ANGELES AS YOU SAID TOWARDS THE ARIZONA AND NEVADA BORDER LOCATED IN THE DESERT REGION. WE HAPPEN TO BE ONE OF THE LARGEST COUNTIES IN RIVERSIDE AND SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES ARE TWO OF THE LARGEST COUNTIES IN CALIFORNIA. THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE IS ONE OF THE FASTEST RANKING UNIVERSITIES WITH 6% OF OUR UNDERGRADUATES IDENTIFYING AS FIRST GENERATION. SO WE’RE IN A REGION WHERE IT’S FAST GROWING AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE IS ONE OF THE NEWER SCHOOLS IN THE AREA. OUR FIRST CLASS OF STUDENTS CAME IN 2013 AND OUR STUDENTS PARTICIPATE FULLY IN THE CURRICULUM WITH SELECTIVES AND DESIGNATED EMPHASIS IN MEDICAL AND HEALTH HUMANITIES WHERE IT SEEMED TO BE A NATURAL PLACE TO EXPLORE GRAPHIC MEDICINE AS AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL. IN ADDITION THE STUDENTS TRAIN WITH A STRONG EMPHASIS ON THE COMMUNITIES OF THIS REGION. OUR TAGLINE IS COMMUNITY-BASED MEDICAL SCHOOL FOR THE 21st CENTURY AND THE MISSION STATEMENT IS IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA AND ESPECIALLY TO SERVE THE INLAND AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BY TRAINING BY DIVERSE WORKFORCE OF PHYSICIANS AND INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE MEDLEY UNDER SERVED IN THE REGION. SO GIVEN THE MISSION OF THE SCHOOL, IT SEEMED TO BE THAT A COLLECTION SEEKED TO BE A NATURAL PROJECT. SO AS AN LIBRARIAN WITHIN DAYS OF ARRIVING I WAS ASKED TO MEET WITH FACULTY THAT WERE INTERESTED IN GRAPHIC MEDICINE. I HAD HAD SOME INTEREST IN GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND FOLD THE DISCUSSIONS AND FOLLOWED THE DISCUSSIONS AND PRESENTATIONS BUT UNTIL RECENTLY THERE WASN’T A SET BLUEPRINT LIKE A DUTIES CORE LIST BUT UCR HAS THE EATON COLLECTION OF FANTASY AND JAPANESE HIP-HOP AND THEY HAD PARTICIPATED IN HOSTING THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE DOT-ORG CENTER FOR IDEAS SOCIETY AND A GRAPHIC MEDICINE DOT-ORG ONE I’LL MENTION IN THE 2015 RIVERSIDE CONFERENCE. THERE WAS SOME HISTORY WITH OUR FACULTY BEING INVOLVED WITH GRAPHIC MEDICINE. HOWEVER, GETTING TO A GRAPHIC MEDICINE COLLECTION, I WANTED TO CONCENTRATE ON THREE MAIN THINGS. ONE, THAT THE COLLECTION CIRCULATE ITS FOCUS TO BE ON MEDICINE AND THE HEALTH SCIENCES AND WOULD REFLECT ON COMMUNITY PARTICULARLY THEIR SCHOOL OF MEDICINE STUDENTS AND THE UCR COMMUNITY. SO WE WENT ABOUT DEVELOPING A LIST OF CONNECTING AND LOOKING TO THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMMUNITY WAS INVALUABLE. GRAPHIC MEDICINE DOT-ORG WAS ONE I MENTIONED AND EVERY WEEK THEY HAVE THIS WEEK IN GRAPHIC MEDICINE PODCAST AND UPDATES ALONG WITH TWITTER IF YOU FOLLOW THE HASH TAG GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND THERE’S THE COMIC ROUNDTABLE. IN LOOKING AT THE COLLECTION, I WENT TO THE COMMUNITY IN COMING UP WITH TITLES BUT I ALSO WANTED TO GET DIVERSE VOICES AND GLOBAL HEALTH TOPICS TO BE REFLECTED IN THE COLLECTION. A SITE HAS REVIEWS FOR SPANISH LANGUAGE COMICS AND
GRAPHIC NOVELS. AND SO THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL IN BRINGING TOGETHER SOME OF THOSE WITH THE COMMUNITY AND FINDING OUT WHERE SOME SOURCES OF GETTING THE TITLES. I HAVE TO SAY IT’S A VERY WELCOMING COMMUNITY AND MANY PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO ANSWER QUESTIONS AND TO FACILITATE ACCESS TO THE TITLES. IN ADDITION, I THEN BROUGHT THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMPONENT IN THE FORM OF GUIDES. THE SCREEN YOU’RE SEEING NOW WAS A WAY THAT WE COULD START BRINGING FORWARD THE TITLES THAT WE STARTED TO PURCHASE FOR CIRCULATION. SOME OF THE TITLES WERE ALSO PART OF OUR LARGER LIBRARY CATALOG HOWEVER, THEY WERE HARDER TO FIND. I WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT GRAPHIC MEDICINE AT UCR AND I’M SHARING THE LINK HERE SO AS WE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THE COLLECTION WE’LL TRY TO INCLUDE MORE FUTURE EVENTS AND IDEAS HERE. THIS ALSO GAVE US AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH THE CURRICULUM IN THE FORM OF COURSE READINGS, CLERKSHIP AND INTEREST GROUPS AND SELECTIVES. SO THIS WINTER WE WORKED WITH THE SELECTIVE OF DEAF AND DYING AND THERE’S A SELECTIVE PROPOSED BY THE STUDENTS AND THEY CAN BE ON VARIOUS TOPICS. THEY ALSO HAVE INTEREST GROUPS THAT GO ALONG WITH THESE SELECTIVES AND HAD PALLIATIVE MEDICINE WITH COMICS WE COULD HIGHLIGHT ALONG WITH THE COURSE READINGS. THIS FALL I’M HOPING TO GET A BOOK CLUB GOING AND COORDINATE TITLES WITH CLERKSHIPS TO STUDENTS HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO THROUGH. SELECTIVES ARE TOPICS OF INTEREST TO THE STUDENTS. AS I MENTIONED, OUR STUDENTS ARE VERY INVOLVED WITH THE CURRICULUM SO THEY CAN PROPOSE A TOPIC TO BE STUDIED DURING THEIR FIRST AND SECOND YEARS. SO AT ONE POINT IN WINTERTIME WE HAD THE DEATH AND DYING SELECTIVE AND WE HAVE AN UPCOMING LGBTQ TOPIC COMING UP THAT NEEDS TO BE APPROVED THROUGH THE DIFFERENT COMMITTEES AND THEN WE WORK TOGETHER WITH THE STUDENTS TO GET THE RESOURCES. SOME OTHER OPTIONS AND EXPERIENCES IS THE LONGITUDINAL AMBULATORY CARE EXPERIENCE THAT’S PART OF THE EDUCATION CURRICULUM HERE AT THE UCR SCHOOL OF MEDICINE. THIS PROGRAM BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN THE LEARNING AND CRITICAL OUTPATIENT BY PROVIDING FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS WITH CLINICAL EXPERIENCE IN A PRIMARY CARE ENVIRONMENT WITH A PROVIDER. HAVING THE TITLES GIVES THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH THE COMMUNITIES. RIGHT NOW WHAT’S NEXT IS THE SUSTAINABILITY AND WORKING THROUGH SOME OF THE WORK FLOWS AND POLICIES. SOME THINGS I DISCOVERED IS THOUGH WE OWN THE TITLE IF IT’S LOCATED IN THE SPECIAL COLLECTION ACCESS MAY BE AN ISSUE. THAT’S WHY I WANTED TO MAKE SURE WHATEVER I ADD TO THE COLLECTION, THESE PARTICULAR TITLES WOULD BE ABLE TO BE CHECKED OUT FOR LONGER PERIOD OF TIME OR AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS AS NEEDED. AGAIN, THIS PROJECT IS A WORK IN PROGRESS AND CONTINUES TO EVOLVE AS OPPORTUNITIES TO COLLABORATE WITH FACULTY AND STUDENTS COME UP. I’M ALWAYS LOOKING AT FUTURE COLLABORATIONS. AND ONE UPCOMING ACADEMIC YEAR IS GEEK WEEK AND A POP-UP LIBRARY FOR HIGHLIGHTING THE TITLES WE HAVE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND IF THERE ARE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, I AM LEAVING MY E-MAIL ON THE SLIDE AND YOU CAN FORWARD QUESTION TO ME. THANK YOU ELISA. OUR NEXT PRESENTER IS JERRY KAUPPILA AND I’LL PASS THE BALL TO HIM. JERRY IS A PROJECT AND OUTREACH ASSISTANT AT THE NNLM WITH ALL OF US. HE WILL BE PRESENTING ON THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMMUNITY TODAY. >> THANK YOU. I’M JERRY AND I AM A PROGRAM AND OUTREACH ASSISTANT AT THE NNLM PSR. TODAY I’M GOING SHARE A QUICK LOOK AT THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMMUNITY AND SOME OF THE WAYS THAT NNLM IS INVOLVED. THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMMUNITY IS A RAPIDLY GROWING GROUP MADE UP OF ACCORDING TO GRAPHIC MEDICINE DOT-ORG, ACADEMICS, AUTHORS, COMICS AND FANS OF MEDICINE. THE NNLM IS A LITTLE BIT OF ALL OF THAT. HOPEFULLY WE CAN WORK OUR WAY INTO THE DEFINITION AT SOME POINT. WE’LL BE RECOGNIZED BY GRAPHIC MEDICINE DOT-ORG. THE NNLM IS HELPING NURTURE THE COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING GRAPHIC WEBINARS LIKE TODAY AND HAVE EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, CONFERENCES, READING CLUB KITS AND FUNDING AND MORE ACTIVITIES COMING UP ALL THE TIME. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF OUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. FIRST OFF, I WANT TO START WITH THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMMUNITY IS SMALL AND GROWING. I LIKE TO LOOK AT THE COMMUNITY AS A SOLAR SYSTEM. SO CENTER AROUND THE SUN WHICH IS GRAPHIC MEDICINE DOT-ORG AND LED BY IAN, MK AND MATTHEW AND ALICE AND IT’S LIKE CHER AND MADONNA YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO KNOW THEIR FIRST NAMES AND A DIDN’T WANT TO BUTCHER A LAST ANYTIME SO I KEPT THEIR FIRST GAMES. USING THE DEFINITION, THE SMALLER PLANETS CIRCULATING NEARBY ARE THE ACADEMICS AND AUTHORS AND ARTISTS AND THERE’S THE NNLM SNEAKING IN AS THE EARTH AND I LIKE TO CONSIDER US WE’RE A HOME BASE FOR BOOK CLUBS. INFORMATIONAL RESOURCES AND TRAINING AND FUNDING. NOW ON THE OUTSIDE ARE SOME OF THE BIGGER GROUPS, THE LIBRARIANS AND THE FANS OF COMICS IN MEDICINE. THAT IS A LOOK AT THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMMUNITY. FROM THE NNLM, JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US. THE GOAL OF THE NNLM IS TO ADVANCE THE PROGRESS OF MEDICINE AND IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH BY PROVIDING U.S. HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WITH EQUAL ACCESS TO BIOMEDICAL INFORMATION AND IMPROVING INDIVIDUAL’S ACCESS TO INFORMATION TO ENABLE THEM TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR HEALTH. THAT IS WHAT WE’RE DOING WITH GRAPHIC MEDICINE. IT’S A GREAT TIE-IN. YOU CAN SEE THE NATIONAL NETWORK OF LIBRARIES OF MEDICINE IS MADE OF EIGHT REGIONS. OKAY. DR. PATTI BRENNAN, THE DIRECTOR OF THE NLM RECOGNIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF GRAPHIC MEDICINE. IN A VIDEO FROM VOA NEWS ON YOUTUBE AND I’LL PROVIDE A LINK AT THE END, DR. BRENNAN SAID THE POWER OF COMICS IS USEFUL NOT ONLY FOR PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS BUT FOR THOSE WHO WORK WITH THEM. SOMETIMES WE USE GRAPHIC MEDICINE FOR TRAINING CLINICIANS OR FOR DEBRIEFING PRACTITIONERS IN THE WORKFORCE. THE PICTURE HELPS THEM BRING OUT THE CONCERNS, THE MULTIDIMENSIONAL EXPERIENCE OF INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE. THIS TOP-LEVEL SUPPORT IS SO GREAT IN HELPING US AT THE NNLM TO GROW OUR INVOLVEMENT IN GRAPHIC MEDICINE. I’LL START WITH NNLM AT THE NEW ENGLAND REGION. THE NER HAS JUMPED TO THE FOREFRONT OF THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE MOVEMENT IN THE NNLM BY CREATING A GRAPHIC MEDICINE INITIATIVE. NER HAS MADE GRAPHIC MEDICINE ONE THEIR COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO RECOGNIZE THE ROLE THAT COMICS PLAY IN COMMUNICATING HEALTH. IT INCLUDES LIBRARIANS IN THE CONVERSATION WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR US AND IT PROVIDES TRAINING, COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT, ASSISTANCE AND PROGRAMMING IN A BOX IN A GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOK CLUB KIT YOU’LL GET IN A SECOND. IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR, NER HOSTED AN AMAZING COMIC CONFERENCE BRINGING TOGETHER ALL THE PEOPLE FROM THE DEFINITION. THERE WERE ARTISTS AND AUTHORS AND LIBRARIANS AND ACADEMICS TO DISCUSS THE INTERSECTION OF MEDICINE AND HUMANITIES. THE KEY NOTE ADDRESS WAS BY THE AUTHOR OF OUR RX, A GRAPHIC MEMOIR, RACHEL LINDSEY. A REALLY GOOD REPRESENTATION OF NNLM AND GETTING THE WORD OUT ON GRAPHIC MEDICINE. THERE’S ALSO A GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOK CLUB KIT. IT’S AVAILABLE TO BE CHECKED OUT FOR SIX-WEEK PERIODS ON TOPICS RANGE FROM ADDICTION AND AGING AND VETERANS HEALTH AND YOU CAN SEE THE TITLES AND TOPICS THERE. IF YOU’RE IN THE NER REGION YOU CAN CHECK OUT THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOK CLUB KIT. IF YOU’RE NOT IN THE REGION IT’S A GREAT STARTING POINT TO BUILD YOUR COLLECTION WITH THESE TITLES AND THERE ARE DOWNLOADABLE DISCUSSION GUIDES FOR EACH TITLE ON THE NER WEBSITE WHICH I’LL PROVIDE AT THE END AS WELL. AS I MENTIONED, NER DID MAKE GRAPHIC MEDICINE AN INITIATIVE. THIS IS HOW YOU CAN ACCESS THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE. GO TO TO THE WEBSITE AND SELECT INITIATIVES IN GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND YOU’LL FIND WEBINARS, LINK AND SLIDES AND ALL KINDS OF INFORMATIONAL MATERIALS. NEXT WE’LL LOOK AT THE PROGRAM AT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MED SPIN THEY’RE GOAL IS TO PROMOTE GREATER UNDERSTANDING AND AWARENESS OF HOW THE PAST INFORM THE PRESENT AND CAN SHAPE THE FUTURE. A GREAT MIX OF COMICS AND MEDICINE. IN JANUARY OF 2018, AND PRESENTERS MENTIONED THE AUTHOR OF MARBLES. SHE CURATED THIS PRESENTATION GRAPHIC MEDICINE ILL-CONCEIVED AND WELL DRAWN. THAT WENT OUT IN 2018. IT
INCLUDED IN THE EXHIBITION AND YOU CAN ACCESS INFORMATION RESOURCES FROM ANYWHERE. ONLINE WE HAVE DOWNLOADABLE POSTERS AND BROCHURES. LESSON PLANS AND MODULE FOR HEALTH AND MEDICINE, LINK TO MED LINE PLUS. FROM THE EXAMPLES OF THE ACTUAL EXHIBITION, IT LINKS TO MED LINE PLUS AND LINKS IN NO NNLM S AND I FOUND AN EXHIBITION AND RACHEL WALDON HOSTS THE EXHIBIT AND PARTNERSHIPS FORMED WHILE HOSTING AN EXHIBIT AND SOME LIBRARY PROGRAMMING THEY DID. SO IT’S A GREAT STARTING PLACE TO HEAR OF HER EXPERIENCES FROM HOSTING THE EXHIBIT. THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE EXHIBIT IS CURRENTLY SCHEDULED OUT NOW THROUGH JANUARY OF 2022. THE EXHIBIT COMES TO THE PSR IN MAY OF 2020. IT WILL BE IN IRVINE AND PALO ALTO AT THE SAME TIME AND AS ELISE SAID EARLIER IT COMES BACK TO HER SCHOOL, UC RIVERSIDE IN JANUARY OF 2021. CURRENTLY, YOU CAN FIND IT IN PITTSBURGH AND IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA. THERE’S A LINK INCLUDED THERE AND IT WILL ALSO BE INCLUDED AT THE END SO YOU CAN FIND OUT WHEN IT’S GOING TO BE NEAR YOU. AND AGAIN, IF IT’S NOT COMING NEAR YOU, THERE ARE A LOT OF GRAPHIC MEDICINE RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO YOU ON THE NLM WEBSITE THAT ARE FREE AND AVAILABLE. NEXT UP WE HAVE THE NNLM “ALL OF US” PROGRAMMING GUIDE. IT’S A MEDICINE AND HEALTH STORY TELLING PROGRAM GUIDE. IT’S A COLLECTION OF RESOURCES TO HELP YOU GET STARTED WITH THE PROGRAM IN YOUR ORGANIZATION. GET PARTNERSHIP IDEAS, PROGRAMMING PLANS AND VIEW A SAMPLE BUDGET FOR A GRAPHIC MEDICINE COLLECTION. IT’S ALSO TIED IN WITH THE “ALL OF US” RESEARCH PROGRAM AND MEDLINE PLUS. IT’S ALSO A GREAT STARTING POINT. A COUPLE TIMES I’VE MENTIONED READING CLUBS. THE PSR IS PART OF THE NNLM READING CLUB KIT. HOPEFULLY YOU HEARD OF IT BY NOW. IF YOU HAVEN’T OR HAVEN’T APPLIED YET THE READING CLUB OFFERS TITLES THAT SUPPORT LIBRARY PROGRAMMING FOCUSSING ON NATIONAL HEALTH OBSERVANCES. AS FAR AS GRAPHIC MEDICINE GOES NATIONALLY RX IS OFFERED AND IN THE PSR WE ADDED MARVELS TO THE LIST. ON THE SLIDE YOU SEE HOW ON FREE COMIC DAY THIS YEAR THE PSR TWEETED THIS PHOTO WITH THE LINE WE CELEBRATE FREE COMIC BOOK EVERY DAY. THE REST OF THE WORLD CELEBRATES IN MAY, THE NNLM CELEBRATES EVERY DAY. YOU CAN APPLY FOR YOUR FREE KIT TODAY. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE READING CLUB KIT. YOU CAN SUGGEST A TITLE IF YOU WANT AND AGAIN THAT LINK WILL BE PROVIDED. COMING SOON WE HAVE PSR FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT. IF YOU’RE IN THE PACIFIC SOUTHWEST REGION, KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR A SOON TO BE RELEASED FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOCUSSED ON ADDING GRAPHIC MEDICINE TO YOUR COLLECTION. WATCH FOR UPDATES ON PSR NEWS AND FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER. A LOT OF GOOD RESOURCES THAT WE PUT OUT THREE OUR SOCIAL MEDIA. THROUGH OUR SOCIAL MEDIA. ALONG WITH THE NNLM THERE’S A TON OF RESOURCES. A LOT OF RESOURCES AVAILABLE. START AT GRAPHIC MEDICINE DOT-ORG AND MEDICINA GRAPHICA MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY. ON FACEBOOK GO TO GRAPHIC MEDICINE 1 OR ON INSTAGRAM GRAPHIC MEDICINE. SAME WITH GRAPHIC MEDICINA ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM. IF YOU GO THERE YOU’LL HAVE ACCESS TO MORE RESOURCES THAN YOU CAN START WITH. BEGIN THERE AND GET FAMILIAR WITH THE COMMUNITY AND INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO THE COMMUNITY. AS ELISA SAID IT’S AN OPEN AND WELCOMING COMMUNITY. THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE HASH TAG ON INSTAGRAM AND FACEBOOK GIVES YOU A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES AND ALSO LOOK FOR CONFERENCES, EXHIBITS AND WEBINARS. THIS ONE SHOWN HERE IS AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY. BILLY IRELAND CARTOON AND MUSEUM. IT IS CURRENTLY GOING ON. IT’S BASED ON A GRAPHIC MEMOIR AND ALONG WITH THAT I HAVE LINKS TO THESE RESOURCES AND MORE AT THE END. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, CONTACT YOUR REGION. SO THE NNLM IS BROKEN UP INTO EIGHT REGIONS. YOU CAN FIND YOUR REGION BY GOING TO NNLM.gov/REGION AND LOOKING FOR YOUR STATE. THIS WILL ALSO BE INCLUDED IN MY PRESENTATION SO YOU HAVE ACCESS TO ALL THE URLs AND ALL THE RESOURCES.
