Jagmeet Singh holds town hall in Halifax

>> HELLO, EVERYONE. I’M LISA ROBERTS. I’M THE MLA FOR HALIFAX NEEDHAM. AND I’M NOT THE STAR ATTRACTION TODAY. AND I CAN’T WAIT TO HAND OVER THIS MICROPHONE TO JAGMEET, BUT FIRST LET ME ACKNOWLEDGE WE’RE GATHERED HERE ON ANCESTRAL LAND. AND AS YOU’LL HAVE NOTICED, JAGMEET’S ALREADY RECOGNIZED SOME VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE WITH US TODAY. MY COLLEAGUES CLAUDIA AND SUE, MLA’S IN DARTMOUTH NORTH AND DARTMOUTH SOUTH. [Cheering and Applause] FORM. >> Reporter: DARTMOUTH MP WENDY LIL IS — [Applause] AND OF COURSE THE NDP’S FIRST TRAIL BLAZING LEADER ALEXA McDONAGH. [Cheering and Apau] AND I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING THE REAL HARD WORK AT EVERY DOOR TODAY. AND FOR THESE FIVE WEEKS. ALL OF OUR NDP CANDIDATES FROM NOVA SCOTIA WHO ARE HERE. SO WE HAVE THEM HERE. [Cheering and Applause] EMMA NORTON. EMMA NORTON IN DARTMOUTH. [Cheering and Applause] DARTMOUTH-COAL HARBOUR. JESSICA HEPBURN. [Cheering and Applause] SOUTH SHORE St. MARGARET. CHRISTINE SONIA FROM HALIFAX. [Cheering and Applause] WE HAVE JODY McDAVID. [Cheering and Appl] FROM CAPE BRETON — SYDNEY VICTORIA. SORRY, SORRY. PROVINCIAL MOMENT. MATTHEW DUBOIS FROM WEST NOVA. [Cheering and Applause] BETSY McDONALD FROM CENTRAL NOVA. [Cheering and A JACOB WILSON FROM HALIFAX WEST. [Cheering and Applause] AND STEVEN SCHNEIDER FROM KINGS HAND. [Cheering and Applause] SO AS THE PROVINCIAL MLA I CAN TELL THAT YOU MOST OF THE PHONE CAMELS I GET IN MY OFFICE ARE FROM PEOPLE STRUGGLING TO FIND AFFORDABLE HOUSING OR AFRAID THAT ACTUALLY THE HOUSING THEY HAVE RIGHT NOW MIGHT NOT BE WITHIN THEIR MEANS IN ANOTHER MONTH OR TWO. AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AS A MOM WITH TWO YOUNG KIDS WHO IS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE SECURE HOUSING, IT’S CLIMATE CHANGE THAT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT AND UNITES ME WITH THOSE CLIMATE MARCHERS. AND SO — [Applause] AND PEOPLE ARE GETTING FRUSTRATED. WITH PRETTY WORDS THAT DON’T TRANSLATE INTO ACTION. AND WITH POLITICIANS WHO USE THOSE PRETTY WORLDS. AND SO IT’S SO REFRESHING AND SO EXCITING TO HAVE A LEADER LIKE JAGMEET SINGH WHO IS IN ENGLISH, IN FRENCH, IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE AUTHENTIC AND GENUINELY CARES ABOUT US ALL. [Cheering and Applause] TOGETHER WE CAN IMPLEMENT GOOD IDEAS THAT WILL ALLOW US TO TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER AND TAKE CARE OF THOSE REALLY CHALLENGING PROBLEMS. AND SO I’M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO JAGMEET TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THAT. [Cheering and Applause] >> THANK YOU, THANK YOU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. CAN WE JUST GIVE IT UP FOR LISA ROBERTS? SHE’S AMAZING. YOU’RE AWESOME. [Cheering and Applause] AND WHILE WE’RE DOING IT, CAN WE GIVE IT UP TO THE ENTIRE NDP TEAM HERE IN NOVA SCOTIA. THEY’RE FIGHTING SO HARD FOR US. THEY’RE AMAZING. LET’S GIVE THEM SOME LOVE. [Cheering and ] AND TO MY FRIEND GARY BURROW, THE LEADER OF THE NDP, THANK YOU FOR THE FIGHT THAT YOU’RE DOING. LET’S GIVE HIM SOME LOVE AS WELL. YES. HE’S NOT ACTUALLY HERE. I SAW SOME PEOPLE START TO LOOK AROUND. I KIND OF POINTED WHEN I SAID THAT, SO I REALIZE THAT WAS NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO DO THAT. I’M JUST THANKING HIM FOR HIS LEADERSHIP. BUT I KNOW LISA ALREADY DID IT, BUT I KNOW I THINK ALEXA WAS A LITTLE BIT SHOCKED AT THE LOVE, BUT SHE SHOULDN’T BE SHOCKED. SHE IS A TRAILBLAZER. SHE’S INSPIRED A LOT OF PEOPLE, AND IF I CAN BE HONEST WITH YOU, I WOULDN’T BE THE LEADER I AM TODAY IF IT WASN’T FOR PEOPLE LIKE ALEXA WHO BROKE BARRIERS AND SHOWED WE COULD HAVE LEADERSHIP COME UP. SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU. YOU’RE AWESOME. ALEXA McDONAGH. [Cheering and Applause] YOU DESERVE IT. YOU DESERVE IT. ALEXA SAYS THERE’S LOTS OF ENERGY HERE. I’M, LIKE, YES, IT’S FOR YOU, ALEXA. SHE DESERVES IT. SHE’S AMAZING. AND I HAVE AN INCREDIBLE TEAM. WHENEVER YOU ARE SEE ME STANDING AND SPEAKING, I WANT YOU TO KNOW I’M NEVER BY MYSELF. I MIGHT SEEM LIKE I’M STANDING ON MY OWN AT TIMES, BUT IMAGINE THERE’S A WHOLE TEAM OF PEOPLE BEHIND ME. NOW LITERALLY THERE IS A TEAM OF PEOPLE BEHIND ME. THERE’S STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS. YOU ARE ALL THE TEAM THAT MAKES THIS ALL POSSIBLE. AND IT’S NEVER A SINGLE PERSON. IT’S ALWAYS A TEAM THAT DOES IT. SO I’M HONOURED TO HAVE SUCH INCREDIBLE CANDIDATES THAT ARE PUTTING THEIR NAME ON THE BALLOT THAT ARE PUTTING THEMSELVES FOORPD. IT’S AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR DEMOCRACY AND I’M GRATEFUL TO HAVE THESE CANDIDATES BEHIND ME. SO LET’S GIVE THEM SOME LOVE. THANK YOU. [Cheering and Appl] YES! SO, FRIENDS, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT, OF COURSE WE HAVE AN ELECTION COMING UP. AND THERE’S A LOT OF ISSUES. I KNOW THERE’S GOING TO BE LOTS OF QUESTIONS. I DON’T WANT TO TALK TOO LONG. I WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME HEARING FROM YOU AND YOUR QUESTIONS. BUT I WANT TO JUST TALK ABOUT KIND OF WHAT’S AT STAKE AND WHAT WE’RE UP AGAINST AND WHY THIS ELECTION IS SO IMPORTANT. IS TO THERE’S LOTS TO TALK ABOUT. BUT I LOOK AT WHAT’S GOING ON ACROSS CANADA AND I THINK ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON HERE IN NOVA SCOTIA. AND LISA MENTIONED PEOPLE WORRIED ABOUT HOUSING. IT’S TRUE. PEOPLE ARE REALLY WORRIED ABOUT HOUSING. MORE AND MORE IT’S BECOMING A MASSIVE CONCERN. PEOPLE ARE WORRIED ABOUT PARENTS THAT HAVE A HOME. WORRIED ABOUT IF THEIR KIDS WOULD EVER BE ABLE TO AFFORD A PLACE OF THEIR OWN. PEOPLE SOMETIMES SAY, WELL, I CAN’T EVEN THINK ABOUT OWNING A PLACE. I CAN’T EVEN FIND A PLACE I CAN RENT. THAT’S A REAL CONCERN FOR PEOPLE. IT’S SO EXPENSIVE FOR SO MANY PEOPLE. I KNOW HEALTH CARE IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS REALLY TOP OF MIND. PARTICULARLY HERE IN NOVA SCOTIA THERE’S A LOT OF CHALLENGES. AND WE KNOW THAT, YOU KNOW, THE PREMIER DOESN’T SEEM TO REALLY THINK THIS IS A PRIORITY. MADE A LOT OF COMMITMENTS WHEN HE GOT ELECTED P SEEMS TO BE BREAKING THOSE AS WELL. I GUESS IT’S A BIT OF A TREND WITH THE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT. BUT I MEAN, THERE’S SOME SERIOUS CONCERNS. PEOPLE ARE UNABLE TO GET THE HEALTH CARE THEY NEED WHEN THEY NEED IT. AND FOR ME, SOME OF THE HEART BREAKING STORIES I HEAR ARE ACCESS TO MEDICATION. AND THE REASON WHY IT’S SO HEART BREAK SOMETHING WE KNOW THAT IT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL THAT SOMEONE WHO GOES TO A DOCTOR — I’M SURE YOU’VE HEARD THESE STORIES AS WELL. THEY GO TO A DOCTOR AND FIND OUT WHAT’S WRONG WITH THEM AND THEN THEY’RE TOLD TO TAKE A MEDICATION, TO HEAL THE ILLNESS, OR TO MAKE SURE THEY CAN STAY HEALTHY. THEY CAN’T AFFORD THAT MEDICATION. WHETHER IT’S PEOPLE THAT SKIP MEDICATION BECAUSE THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO TAKE ALL THE MEDICATION THEY NEED, SO THEY SKIP A PILL, CUT A PILL IN HALF OR THEY JUST DON’T TAKE IT. BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO MAKE A CHOICE BETWEEN MAYBE BUYING THAT MEDICATION OR BUYING FOOD OR PAYING THE BILLS. IT’S REALLY HARD DECISIONS THAT PEOPLE ARE MAKING LIKE THIS. AND IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME THAT THAT’S WHAT’S GOING ON THE YOU CAN GO AND FIND OUT WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU, BUT YOU CAN’T ACTUALLY TREAT YOURSELF AND GET THE TREATMENT, THE MEDICATION. AND THEN WE SEE THE IMPACT ON EMERGENCY ROOMS. HOW DOES IT MAKE SENSE THAT IF SOMEONE COULDN’T AFFORD A $5 A DAY PILL THEY END UP IN A HOSPITAL THAT COSTS $1,500 A DAY. IT MAKES NO SENSE. IT’S ACTUALLY A HORRIBLE WAY TO DO THINGS. AND THEN I THINK ABOUT THIS KID THAT I MET. AND SOMETHING ABOUT HIM I CAN’T SHAKE. HE WAS A YOUNG KID BORN WITH A CHRONIC ILLNESS. AND HE WAS REALLY PRECOCIOUS. LIKE, WISE BEYOND HIS YEARS. HE WAS TELLING ME ABOUT THE ILLNESS, HOW HE HAS TO TAKE PILLS AND MEDICATION. HE COULD TELL I WAS WORRIED AND HE WAS, LIKE, DON’T WORRY ABOUT ME. I KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF MYSELF AND MY MEDICATION. I CAN MONITOR MY BLOOD. I GOT THIS. THERE IS ONE THING THOUGH. HE SAID I AM WORRIED ABOUT HOW IT AFFECTS MY MOM AND DAD. HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT BEING A BURDEN TO HIS PARENTS. IN A COUNTRY AS RICH AS OURS HE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO FEEL THAT WAY. PEOPLE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO MAKE THESE TOUGH DECISIONS AND CHOICES. I THINK ABOUT WHAT THE OPTIONS ARE. WE HAVE Mr. TRUDEAU WHO SAYS — HE MEETS WITH THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY. ONE OF THE THINGS HE SAID IN PUBLIC WAS, LAST YEAR OR LAST ELECTION, 2015, HE PROMISED TO JUST CHANGE A LIST OF COUNTRY THAT IS WE SET OUR PRICES. AND IF WE CHANGE THE LIST OF COUNTRIES, IT WOULD COST US ZERO DOLLARS. JUST CHANGING THE LIST OF COUNTRIES THAT WE USED TO SET THE PRICES FOR MEDICATION. IT COULD HAVE DROPPED THE COST OF MEDICATION SIGNIFICANTLY, SAVING FAMILIES THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. FOUR YEARS PASSED AND HE DIDN’T DO IT. I WAS WONDERING WHY WOULDN’T HE DO SOMETHING THAT WOULD COST ZERO DOLLARS. IT WOULD JUST BE CHANGING A LIST OF COUNTRIES. IT SEEMS PRETTY EASY. I KIND OF FELT LIKE I SHOULD JUST PASS THE LIST OVER. LIKE, WHY COULDN’T HE DO IT? WELL, IT TURNS OUT THERE’S A REASON WHY HE DIDN’T DO IT. IN FOUR YEARS HE MET WITH THE PHARMACEUTICAL LOBBYISTS. HE MET WITH BIG PHARMA LOBBYISTS A WHOLE BUNCH OF TIMES. NOW, IT’S HARD TO TRACK ALL THE INCIDENT WHEN IS PEOPLE ARE LOBBIED BECAUSE SOME OF THEM DON’T FIT IN THE CRITERIA, BUT A LOT OF THEM ARE REGISTERED. AND WE CAN COUNT THEM. AND SO OUR RESEARCHERS COUNTED THEM. GUESS HOW MANY TIMES IN FOUR YEARS THE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT, Mr. TRUDEAU’S GOVERNMENT, MET WITH THE PHARMACEUTICAL BIG PHARMA LOBBYISTS. ROUGH GUESS IN FOUR YEARS. 90? SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF TIMES. SOMEONE READ THE RELEASE ALREADY. [Laughter] THAT’S CALLED CHEATING, SIR. NO. [Laughter] YOU’RE RIGHT. IT’S OVER 600 TIMES. OVER 600 TIMES IN FOUR YEARS. SO IT COMES AS NO SURPRISE THEN THAT Mr. TRUDEAU PUBLICALLY SAYS I’M GOING TO PROMISE TO REDUCE THE COST OF MEDICATION, BUT PRIVATELY MEETS HIS GOVERNMENT — HIS GOVERNMENT MEETS WITH THE PHARMACEUTICAL LOBBYISTS OVER 600 TIMES AND THEN ABANDONS THAT PROMISE. BUT GUESS WHAT? THERE’S A NEW ELECTION. SO GUESS WHAT HE’S DOING NOW? HE’S PROMISING IT AGAIN. AND YOU KNOW WHAT? I WAS LOOKING BACK AT THE PROMISES. YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIMES, HOW MANY YEARS IT’S BEEN SINCE THE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT HAS PROMISED STOP FORM OF PHARMACARE? 23 YEARS. THEY STARTED PROMISING IT 23 YEARS AGO. AND THEY STUDY IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. THE FIRST STUDY — THE FIRST STUDY CAME OUT IN THE 1960’S. THE FIRST ROYAL COMMISSION SAID WHEN WE EXPAND MEDICARE FOR ALL, IT HAS TO INCLUDE MEDICATION FOR ALL. OTHERWISE IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE. SO THIS IS THE CHOICE WE’RE UP AGAINST. AND THE OTHER CHOICE WE HAVE, I’M NOT SURE I NEED TO MAKE THE ARGUMENT, BUT THERE’S THE CONSERVATIVES. FROM THE GROANS IN THE ROOM I CAN SENSE THAT I DON’T NEED TO BE VERY PERSUASIVE HERE. BUT I CAN TELL THAT YOU THEY’RE DEFINITELY GOING TO SAY THEY’RE GOING TO PUT SOME MONEY IN YOUR POCKETS. THEY’RE GOING TO CUT TAXES. THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO SAY. THAT’S WHAT THEY SAY. BUT LET’S BE CLEAR. WHEN THEY CUT TAXES DO THEY CUT TAXES FOR FAMILIES? THEY CUT TAXES FOR THE WEALTHIEST, THE PEOPLE AT THE VERY TOP. WHAT THEY DO CUT FOR FAMILIES THOUGH, SERVICES. THEY CUT THE SERVICES YOU NEED, AND IN FACT, THEY MAKE LIFE EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE. THEY MAKE LIFE EVEN HARDER. ALL THE THINGS YOU NEED BECOME MORE EXPENSIVE. THE HEALTH CARE, THE EDUCATION. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT CONSERVATIVES DO. IN FACT THAT’S OFTEN WHAT LIBERALS DO TOO. BUT THAT’S WHAT Mr. TRUDEAU’S GOING TO DO. HE’S NOT GOING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER. SO THEN I SAY WHAT CAN WE DO? WELL, I’M GOING TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. I DON’T WORK FOR THE RICH. I DON’T WORK FOR THE PRIVILEGED, POWERFUL, ELITE AT THE TOP. I WORK FOR YOU. [Applause] I WORK FOR ALL OF YOU. SO WHEN PEOPLE SAY IT CAN’T BE DONE I’M GOING TO SAY IT CAN BE DONE. BUT WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO IS NOT JUST HAVE UNIVERSAL PHARMACARE, BUT WE’LL HAVE IT BY 2020. WE’LL GET IT DONE IN ONE YEAR. YES, WE ARE. [Applause] THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ALREADY BUYS MEDICATION. FOR VETERANS AND FOR INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES AND SOME VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES. PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENTS ALREA BUY MEDICATION IF YOU GO TO A HOSPITAL. SO INSTEAD OF HAVING SEPARATE NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN PROVINCES AND PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES AND THE GOVERNMENT FEDERALLY AND PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES F WE COMBINE THE BUYING POWER OF ALL OF CANADA, 37 MILLION CANADIANS, WE CAN NEGOTIATE BETTER PRICES AND WE CAN COVER EVERYONE IN OUR COUNTRY. MY PLAN IS THIS. IF YOU NEED MEDICATION IN CANADA, IN HERE, HALIFAX,ISH IN, YOU SHOULD USE YOUR HEALTH CARD, NOT YOUR CREDIT CARD. THAT’S WHAT WE BELIEVE. [Cheering and Applause] BUT WE’RE NOT GOING TO STOP THERE. WE KNOW THERE’S ONE OTHER PART OF THE BODY THAT’S COMPLETELY JUST IGNORED WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH CARE. WE CAN GO IN AND GET OPEN HEART SURGERY AND GET CONSTRUCTIVE KNEE SURGERY, BUT IF OUR TEETH ARE GIVING US PROBLEMS, FOR SOME REASON THAT’S NOT COVERED. THERE’S MILLIONS OF CANADIANS THAT HAVE NO COVERAGE WHATSOEVER. AND SO WHAT WE’RE PUTTING FORWARD IS THE NEXT STEP BEYOND JUST PHARMACARE FOR ALL. OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE WE’RE GOING TO START WITH OUR FIRST STEP TOWARDS UNIVERSAL DENTAL CAROL. WHAT WE’RE PUTTING FORWARD IS DENTA CARE. EVERY FAMILY THAT EARNS LESS THAN 70,000 WILL IMMEDIATELY BE COVERED WITH A UNIVERSAL PUBLIC DENTAL CARE PROGRAM. [C] I’M GOING TO WRAP IT UP RIGHT HERE. PEOPLE WILL SAY HOW ARE WE GOING TO PAY FOR THIS, Mr. SINGH? THAT’S THE QUESTION, RIGHT? I’LL GIVE YOU ONE, CLEAR EXAMPLE. THE DENTAL CARE PROGRAM WE’RE TALKING ABOUT, DENTA CARE, WHICH COVERS 4.3 MILLION CANADIANS, 4.3 MILLION. FOR EVERY FAMILY THAT EARNS LESS THAN 70,000 COVERED, THE PLAN WOULD COST $856 MILLION. I’M GOING TO GIVE AWE QUICK EXAMPLE OF CHOICES. LAST YEAR ALONE Mr. TRUDEAU GAVE $14 BILLION IN THE FALL ECONOMIC STATEMENT — HE GAVE $14 BILLION TO THE WEALTHIEST CORPORATIONS TO BUY CORPORATE JETS AND LIMOUSINES. HE BOUGHT A PIPELINE FOR $4.5 BILLION. HE WROTE OFF CORPORATE LOANS. CORPORATE LOANS TO THE TUNE OF $6 BILLION. HE FORGAVE THEM TO THE WEALTHIEST CORPORATIONS. WE’RE ALREADY CLOSE TO $25 BILLION. THAT COULD PAY FOR 25 TIMES THE PLAN THAT I’M PROPOSING. SO ON ONE HAND, $25 BILLION Mr. TRUDEAU HAS SPENT TO THE WEALTHIEST CORPORATIONS, AND I’M SAYING $856 MILLION FOR DENTAL CARE FOR EVERYONE WHO DOESN’T HAVE IT. [Cheering and Applause] THE CHOICES. AND ANOTHER THING, WE’RE GOING TO ASK THE PEOPLE AT THE VERY TOP TO PAY A LITTLE MORE. WE’RE NOT AFRAID TO SAY THAT. [Cheering and Applause] WE’RE GOING TO CLOSE OFFSHORE TAX HAVENS AND PUT IN PLACE A SUPER TAX SO THOSE WHO HAVE FORTUNES OVER $20 MILLION WILL HAVE TO PAY A LITTLE MORE. BECAUSE THEY CAN AFFORD TO. AND WE’RE GOING TO INVEST IN PROGRAMS PEOPLE NEED. I’M PROUD TO SAY THAT. [Cheer] AND THERE’S ONE VERY LAST IMPORTANT THING THAT I WANT TO SAY. YOU KNOW, AT THE END OF THE DAY IN THIS ELECTION PEOPLE ARE GOING TO ASK THE QUESTION, YOU KNOW, WHAT’S THE POINT OF THIS ELECTION. YOU KNOW, WHAT ARE WE VOTING FOR? I SAY TO YOU THAT FOR TOO LONG THE POWERFUL AND THE WEALTHY HAVE HAD TWO PARTIES THEY CAN GO TO. THEY KIND OF ROTATE. THEY GO FROM RED DOOR TO BLUE DOOR. THE POWERFUL AND WEALTHY KNOW THEY CAN COUNT ON LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES TO HAVE THEIR BACK. WELL, PEOPLE NEED SOMEONE WHO HAS THEIR BACK. HAVE I YOUR BACK. I’M HE FIGHTING FOR YOU. I’M ANYTIME FOR YOU. YOU CAN CHOOSE NOT THE RED OR THE BLUE DOOR THIS TIME. LET’S CHOOSE THE BEAUTIFUL ORANGE DOOR, MY FRIENDS. ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU. [Cheering and Applause] THANK THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU, THANK YOU. THIS IS THE HALIFAX LOVE, RIGHT? THANK YOU, HALIFAX! THANK YOU, NOVA SCOTIA! BUT I WANT TO GET TO YOUR QUESTIONS. THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU. WE HAVE SOME QUESTIONS, FOLKS. SORRY I TOOK A LITTLE TOO LONG. I WAS GETTING REALLY EXCITED AND PASSIONATE. I LOVE THIS. I THINK IT’S AN IMPORTANT TOPIC. WE HAVE A QUESTION RIGHT HERE AND WE’RE GOING TO KEEP ON GOING. >> YOU’RE GOING TO HOLD IT FOR ME? THANK YOU. WHAT SERVICE. JAGMEET, THANK YOU FOR COMING TO HALIFAX. AS A PROVIDER OF ABORTION CARE AS A LONG-TIME ADVOCATE FOR ABORTION ACCESS, I KNOW THAT HERE IN CANADA THERE ACTUALLY IS NO ABORTION DEBATE. WE HAVE VERY CLEAR ACCESS TO ABORTION COVERED BY OUR CHARTER. SO THE PROBLEM IS THE LACK OF PROVIDERS. WE HAVE AN ARRANGEMENT IN CANADA WHERE WE COULD HAVE — WE HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR THE GREATEST ACCESS OF ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. BECAUSE WE HAVE ROLLED OUT MEDICAL ABORTION AS PART OF PRIMARY CARE. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO TO ACTUALIZE TRUE UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO CHOICE? >> THANK YOU FOR THE QUESTION. VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION. VERY IMPORTANT. THANK YOU. [Applause] SERIOUSLY, THANK YOU SO MUCH. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I MISSED WHEN I WAS TALKING ABOUT NOVA SCOTIA IS HOW HORRIBLE THE SITUATION IS RIGHT NOW WHEN IT COMES TO ACCESS TO ABORTION SERVICES. ON ONE HAND WE HAVE Mr. TRUDEAU TALKING ABOUT BEING A FEMINIST, BUT ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL WAYS TO EMPOWER WOMEN IS TO MAKE SURE WOMEN HAVE THE RIGHT AND THE CHOICE AND ACCESS TO THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE WHEN OR IF THEY WANT TO HAVE KIDS. AND HAVING ACCESS IS A POWERFUL THING. [Applause] AND IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO TALK ABOUT IT AS A RIGHT. YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. HERE IN NOVA SCOTIA THAT ACCESS TO SERVICE IS ABYSMAL. HORRIBLE AND HORRIBLY FLAWED. WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS ENFORCE THE CANADA HEALTH ACT. IT’S ACTUALLY BEING VIOLATED HERE IN NOVA SCOTIA BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF SERVICE THAT’S BEING PROVIDED. I WOULD SAY VERY CLEARLY THAT THE NEW DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT, WE WOULDN’T JUST TALK ABOUT THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE, BUT WE WOULD BACK THAT RIGHT UP BY MAKING SURE EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO SERVICES WHERE THEY LIVE AND MAKE SURE WE ENFORCE THAT IN EVERY PROVINCE. [Cheering and Applause] THANK YOU VERY MUCH. MORE QUESTIONS. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. MORE QUESTIONS. DO WE HAVE SOME OTHER MICS UP HERE? YEAH, LET’S GO FOR IT. >> MY NAME IS IT DIANNE — >> ONE SEC. LET’S GET THE MIC TO YOU. TRY IT AGAIN. I CAN HEAR YOU. I’LL REPEAT THE QUESTION. TRY IT AGAIN. BUT KEEP IT THERE. IT MIGHT CLICK IN EVENTUALLY. >> I WORK IN ACUTE CARE ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF. I’M A LINOLEUMSED PRACTICAL NURSE AND HAVE WORKED IN THAT AREA FOR OVER 30 YEARS. I’VE SEEN THE DEFAMATION OF OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN NOVA SCOTIA. AND THE CHRONIC UNDERFUNDING. AND I BELIEVE THAT THE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT’S PLAN IS TO BREAK OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE THEIR AGENDA BY CONTRACTING OUT OUR HEALTH CARE SERVICES. THAT’S NOT WHAT NOVA SCOTIANS NEED. THAT’S NOT WHAT CANADIANS NEED. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE NDP IS GOING TO DO TO SIGN ON TO A HEALTH ACCORD FOR FAIR FUNDING AND STOP HALLWAY MEDICINE AND OVERCROWDING AND UNDERFUNDING OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. [Cheering and Applause] >> THANK YOU. AND ALSO THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRONTLINE CARE PROVIDER. YEAH. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. YOU DON’T KNOW HOW MANY LIVES YOU’VE IMPROVED AND YOU’VE TOUCHED WITH YOUR CARE. SO THANK YOU FOR THAT. YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. WHAT’S GOING ON IN CANADA IS IF YOU LOOK OVER THE YEARS THERE YOU’VE TO BE A 50/50 SPLIT BETWEEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT. AND HEALTH CARE WAS WELL FUNDED AND WAS WORKING. AND THEN SLOWLY OVER THE YEARS CONSERVATIVES AND LIBERAL GOVERNMENTS CAME IN AND CUT THAT FUNDING. SO NOW WHAT USED TO BE 50/50 — WHICH I’M SURE PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM KNOW, ROUGH GUESS OF WHERE IT IS NOW. IT USED TO BE 50/50. WHAT’S THE SPLIT NOW? YEAH, SO IT’S BECOME 25/75. SO ALL OF A SUDDEN PROVINCES ARE HAVING TO MAKE DO WITH LOSING HALF OF THE FUNDING. SO NO WONDER HEALTH CARE IS STRUGGLING. WHAT DIANNE TOUCHED ON IS THAT THESE DECISIONS DON’T HAPPEN BY COINCIDENCE. THEY’RE BY DESIGN. WHAT HAPPENS IF HEALTH CARE IS BEING STARVED. WHAT HAPPENS IF WE’RE A PUBLIC SINGLE PAYER, SINGLE TIER, ONE TIER, BEAUTIFUL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS BEING STARVED OF FUNDING? WELL, IT OPENS THE DOOR FOR SOME TO SAY, WELL, WHAT IF WE PRIVATIZE SOME OF IT AND ADD SOME FEES HERE? WHAT IF WE MAKE IT EASIER FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE TO PAY FOR IT? THEN WE LOSE WHAT WE BUILT. WE WILL NOT LET THAT WILL HAPPEN. WE ARE NOT GOING TO LET THAT HAPPEN. [Applause] SO WHAT WE WOULD DO IS WE WOULD MAKE SURE WE RESTORE FUNDING TO HEALTH CARE, DEFEND OUR PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS, DEFEND SOMETHING THAT CANADIANS BELIEVE IS A PART OF OUR IDENTITY. WE BELIEVE IN TAKING CARE OF ONE ANOTHER. AND THE WAY WE DO THAT IS BY FUNDING HEALTH CARE. WHAT HAPPENED IS Mr. HARPER PUT FORWARD A CUT, WHICH IS EFFECTIVELY A CUT OF $30 BILLION FOR THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. HE PLANNED IT, BUT HE DIDN’T IMPLEMENT IT. GUESS WHO IMPLEMENTED HIS CUT? JUSTIN TRUDEAU. JUSTIN TRUDEAU ATTACKED HIM SO VICIOUSLY BUT HE ACTUALLY IMPLEMENTED HIS CUTS TO HEALTH CARE. AND Mr. SCHEER WILL KEEP IT GOING. SO THE ONLY WAY WE CAN CHANGE THAT IS IF WE ELECT A NEW DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT TO FIGHT FOR YOU. [Applause] THANK YOU. AND JUST GIVE A SHOW OF HANDS. WE’VE GOT SOMEONE OVER HERE. SOMEONE HERE AND THEN MAYBE WE CAN HAVE A FOLLOW-UP IF YOU COULD GET SOMEONE ON THIS SIDE AS WELL. SOL SOMEONE RIGHT HERE. >> GOOD AFTERNOON. I SUFFER FROM MENTAL ILLNESS, AND AS A RESULT I’VE MADE IT MY MISSION TO BE A MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE FOR PEOPLE. AND ONE THING THAT I HAVE — [Applause] THANK YOU, THANK YOU. ONE THING THAT I’VE NOTICED THAT’S A COMMON THREAD ACROSS THE BOARD WHEN I SIT DOWN ONE-ON-ONE WITH MANY PEOPLE IS THAT THE WAIT TIMES ARE SO LONG. JUST AS THEY ARE IN REGULAR HEALTH CARE. AND AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED, MENTAL HEALTH CARE HAS BEEN A TWO TIER SYSTEM FOR YEARS. MANY PEOPLE ARE WALKING AWAY FROM GETTING GOOD MENTAL HEALTH CARE BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO WAIT LONG. AND SOME PEOPLE’S CONSEQUENCES COULD BE DIRE. >> THAT’S RIGHT. >> SO MY QUESTION TO YOU IS WHAT IS THE PLAN FOR THE NDP TO PUT IN PLACE RELATIVELY IMMEDIATELY TO HALT THE PEOPLE FROM WALKING AWAY AND GETTING THE CARE THAT THEY DESERVE? >> THANKS. THANKS FOR THE QUESTION. [Applause] I SHOULD ALSO SAY, IT TAKES A LOT OF COURAGE TO STAND UP IN A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE AND SHARE YOUR PERSONAL STORY. AND THE FACT THAT YOU’RE ADVOCATING SOMETHING THAT YOU’RE GOING THROUGH AND USING IT AS MOTIVATION TO ADVOCATE FOR OTHERS IS REALLY POWERFUL. YOU HEARD FROM THIS ROOM THERE’S SO MANY PEOPLE BEHIND UP. THAT’S AMAZING. [Applause] THANK YOU FOR THE QUESTION. WHAT YOU TOUCH THE ON IS VERY TRUE. THAT THERE IS A MASSIVE GAP IN OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. WE TALKED ABOUT ONE OF THE GAPS BEING DENTAL CARE. THAT SEEMS TO BE COMPLETELY EXCLUDED. BUT WE KNOW IT’S SO IMPORTANT. BUT SIMILARLY, MENTAL HEALTH IS SOMETHING THAT’S NOT REALLY ADDRESSED DIRECTLY IN OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. IT’S ANOTHER GAP. AND WHEN WE TALK ABOUT WHAT WE WANT TO DO, NOT ONLY DO WE WANT TO REINVEST AND INCREASE THE INVESTMENTS IN OUR HEALTH CARE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE A PUBLIC HEALTH CARE SYSTEM THAT’S WELL FUNDED, WE ALSO WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM COVERS PEOPLE FROM HEAD TO TOE. AND SO WE WANT MEDICATION COVERAGE, WE WANT DENTAL COVERAGE, BUT WE ALSO WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE’S MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ROLLED INTO OUR VISION OF A TRULY COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. WHERE THERE ARE NO GAPS AND PEOPLE DON’T HAVE TO WAIT FOR A LONG TIME TO RECEIVE THE SERVICES THEY NEED. YES. SO LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT FOR A QUICK SEC. YOU TOUCHED ON THIS. SO WITH MENTAL HEALTH, IF YOU’VE GOT A PRIVATE INSURANCE, YOU MIGHT HAVE A DIRECT ACCESS TO IT. BUT IT’S NOT COVERED PUBLICALLY AND IT’S VERY EXPENSIVE. AND SOMETIMES I THINK ABOUT IT, YOU KNOW, IN A VERY PERSONAL WAY. I SHARED THIS STORY BEFORE. MY DAD WAS ADDICTED REALLY HORRIBLY TO ALCOHOL. AND IT MEANT THAT HE STOPPED EATING FOOD AT ONE POINT. HE LOST HIS JOB, WASN’T ABLE TO WORK. THINGS WERE REALLY UNSTABLE AT HOME. MY BROTHER HAD TO COME LIVE WITH WHEN I WAS IN UNIVERSITY. — LIVE WITH ME WHEN I WAS IN UNIVERSITY. I REMEMBER SEEING HIM WHEN HE WENT FROM 180 POUNDS, PRETTY STURDY GUY, TO 100 POUNDS. WHEN I LIFTED HIM UP ONCE TO HELP HIM SHOWER AND CLEAN UP, IT FELT LIKE I WAS LIFTING UP A YOUNG BOY INSTEAD OF MY DAD. AND IT’S HEART BREAKING TO DO THAT. I REMEMBER WHEN HE WAS AT THE HOSPITAL, ONE OF THE LAST VISITS HE WENT TO THE HOSPITAL THEY SAID THAT IF YOU CONTINUE TO DO THIS, YOU’RE GOING TO DIE. AND HE SAID SOMETHING CAME TO HIM IN THAT MOMENT. HE’D HIT ROCK BOTTOM AND HE SAID I DON’T WANT TO DIE. I WANT TO LIVE. AND IN THAT MOMENT THERE WAS A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY WHEN SOMEONE WHO’S FACING ADDICTION WANTS HELP AND YOU CAN’T GET THAT HELP YOU MIGHT MISS THAT CHANCE. JUST LIKE YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT. IF YOU DON’T GET THE HELP UP NEED WHEN YOU ASK FOR IT, YOU MIGHT MISS THE CHANCE. AND A LOT OF PEOPLE AREN’T AS LUCKY AS WE WERE. WE DIDN’T HAVE INSURANCE AT THE TIME. WE WERE ABOUT TO LOSE OUR HOUSE AND HOME. WE WEREN’T GOING TO HAVE A PLACE TO LIVE. WE DIDN’T HAVE A LOT OF MONEY. IN WINDSOR THERE WAS A PUBLICALLY FUNDED REHAB CENTRE THAT HAD A BE AND MY DAD WAS ADMITTED AND HE GOT BETTER THAT. PUBLICALLY FUNDED REHAB CENTRE SAVED HIS LIFE AND OUR FAMILY. SO I BELIEVE YOUR INCOME STATUS, YOUR JOB STATUS SHOULDN’T DETERMINE YOUR ABOUT SAYS TO HEALTH CARE. EVERYONE IN OUR COUNTRY SHOULD GET THE CARE THEY NEED WHEN THEY NEED IT. WHEREVER THEY ARE. [Cheering and Applause] SO WE’VE GOT ANOTHER QUESTION OVER HERE MAYBE. YEAH. AND JUST KEEP ON GETTING YOUR HANDS UP SO THE FOLKS WITH THE MICS CAN SEE WHERE YOU’RE AT. THEN WE HAVE TO GET THIS OUT OF THE ROOM AS WELL. THERE’S FOLKS OVER THERE. OKAY. >> I’M A STUDENT HERE. THERE ARE 100 COMPANIES I BELIEVE FROM A REPORT THAT SAY THEY PRODUCED 70% OF THE EMISSIONS. WORLDWIDE. AND I WONDER WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO TO THESE COMPANIES IF ANYTHING. AND ALSO HOW ARE YOU GOING TO RETRAIN THOSE PEOPLE CURRENTLY SO THEY CAN FIT BACK IN THEIR ECONOMY. >> BEAUTIFUL QUESTION. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. [Applause] THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE QUESTION. YOU KNOW, IT WOULD BE A YOUNG PERSON THATTED ASKED A QUESTION ON CLIMATE CRISIS. THAT’S AMAZING. IT’S ACTUALLY INSPIRATION TOLL SEE HOW MANY YOUNG PEOPLE ARE GETTING INVOLVED IN POLITICS AND GETTING INVOLVED IN SOCIAL ACTION BECAUSE OF THEIR WORRIES. I MEAN, IT’S SAD THAT THEY’RE WORRIED, BUT IT’S GREAT TO SEE THAT POSITIVE, OPTIMISM. LET’S GET INVOLVED AND DO SOMETHING. THIS WEEK MARKS THE CLIMATE ACTION WEEK. THAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US TO TALK ABOUT. HOW YOUNG PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE HITTING THE STREETS. IN FACT, ALL PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE HITTING THE STREETS IN BIG NUMBERS TO TALK ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO FIGHT CLIMATE CRISIS. BUT YOU TOUCHED ON SOMETHING THAT’S REALLY POWERFUL. I’M REALLY IMPRESSED YOU BROUGHT IT UP. ONE OF THE THEY THINK SO THAT DISTINGUISHES US AS NEW DEMOCRATS IS WE BELIEVE THERE’S AN URGENT CRISIS AND WE NEED TO TACKLE THAT CRISIS. [Applause] WE ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE THERE’S A CRISIS. BUT THERE’S TWO THINGS THAT SETS US APART. ONE IS WE WANT TO GO AFTER THE BIGGEST POLLUTERS. THE FACT THAT Mr. TRUDEAU PURPOSELY, WILLFULLY EXEMPTED THE BIGGEST POLLUTERS FROM PAYING THEIR FAIR SHARE WAS WRONG. IT WAS THE WRONG DECISION. AND SO WHAT WE WOULD DO IS WE WOULD MAKE SURE THAT THE BIGGEST POLLUTERS PAY THEIR SHARE. THERE IS NO WAY THEY SHOULD BE EXEMPT. [Applause] AND THE SECOND THING, THIS IS WHAT REALLY DISTINGUISHES US AS NEW DEMOCRATS, IS WE NEVER WANT TO LEAVE WORKERS BEHIND. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WORKERS ARE NEVER LEFT BEHIND. AND SO IN ANYTHING WE DO, WE’VE GOT TO HAVE A STRONG PLAN TO CREATE JOBS, TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORK, OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRAINING AND RETRAINING SO THAT WORKERS ARE NEVER LEFT BEHIND. AND THAT’S WHY OUR PLAN, OUR NEW DEAL FOR PEOPLE, OUR PLAN, POWER TO CHANGE, TO TAKE ON THE CLIMATE CRISIS IS ALSO A JOBS CREATION PLAN. IT’S ALSO A PLAN TO REIMAGINE EI, THAT EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE SHOULD BE USED AS A WAY TO HELP PEOPLE GET THE EDUCATION THEY NEED, THE TRAINING THEY NEED TO TRANSITION INTO DIFFERENT JOB THAT IS ARE MORE SUSTAINABLE, THAT ARE MORE LONG LASTING. BECAUSE EVERYONE WANTS A SOLID JOB THAT’S RELIABLE AND LONG LASTING. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE PROVIDE THE MEANS SO WE CAN HAVE WORKERS TRAINED FOR THE JOBS FOR THE FUTURE AND THEY’RE NEVER LEFT BEHIND. THAT’S WHAT SETS US APART. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE PROUD TO DO. [Cheering and Applause] THANK YOU. QUESTION THERE. YEAH, GO FOR IT. >> I’VE BEEN TOLD, AND MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE, IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD. BUT MOST CANADIANS AND CANADIAN FAMILIES ARE NOT LIVING IN VILLAGES ANYMORE. THEY’RE LIVING IN LARGE CITIES WHERE AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE IS NONEXISTENT. I BELIEVE THAT A UNIVERSAL AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE IS A BASIC TENANT OF DEMOCRACY. IT ENSURES EQUAL OPPORTUNITY. [Cheering and Applause] WI THE NDPIVE MO FORWARD ON THE CREATION OF A NATIONAL AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE PROGRAM? >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE QUESTION. GREAT QUESTION. GREAT QUESTION. [Applause] THANK YOU. I FEEL LIKE SOMETIMES YOU CAN JUST SAY YES. YES, I AGREE. I ABSOLUTELY AGREE. YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. WE WOULD MAKE IT A PRIORITY. IT’S SOMETHING INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. AGAIN, YOU KNOW, Mr. TRUDEAU TALKS ABOUT BEING A FEMINIST. ONE OF THE CLEAREST WAYS TO ENSURE WOMEN CAN HAVE ACCESS TO THE WORKFORCE, WE CAN TACK IT WILL GENDERED WAGE GAP, IS TO MAKE SURE THERE’S AFFORDABLE, QUALITY, IDEALLY PUBLICALLY DELIVERED, NON-PROFIT, DAYCARE. THAT CAN ENSURE THAT EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO IT. THAT IT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE DON’T HAVE TO MAKE A TOUGH CHOICE BETWEEN GOING TO WORK OR PAYING FOR CAY CARE BECAUSE IT’S SO EXPENSIVE. IT’S SO EXPENSIVE IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE TO GO TO WORK SOMETIMES. IT COULD BE ONE OF THE BOLDEST STEPS FORWARD TO TACK IT WILL INJUSTICE THAT GOES ON — TACK IT WILL — TACKLE THE INJUSTICE THAT GOES ON WITH WAGE GAPS. IT’S PART OF OUR COMMITMENT TO HAVE UNIVERSAL, NATIONAL DAYCARE PROGRAMS. [Applause] ALL RIGHT. WE HAVE TIME FOR ANOTHER QUESTION HERE. >> HI, I’M A STUDENT HERE STUDYING PSYCHOLOGY. SO OF COURSE AS A STUDENT IN ONE OF THE PROVINCES WITH ONE OF THE HIGHEST RATES OF TUITION, I’M WONDERING WHAT YOU’LL DO TO HELP SUBSIDIZE OR HELP STUDENTS DEAL WITH THAT COST. >> SURE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE QUESTION. THANK YOU. SO YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. IT’S PRETTY CRUSHING. I’VE SPOKEN WITH LOTS OF STUDENTS WHO TELL ME ABOUT NOT ONLY DOES IT COST A LOT, BUT WHEN YOU GRADUATE THERE’S ALSO LOANS STUDENTS HAVE TO TAKE, THERE’S INTEREST ON THAT LOAN. AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, IN FACT, CHARGES NOT JUST PRIME BUT PRIME PLUS 3%. THAT’S WAY MORE THAN A BANK WOULD EVEN CHARGE AND BANKS AREN’T THE BEST. AND THEN STUDENTS HAVE TO PAY BACK CRUSHING INTEREST ON TOP OF THE PRINCIPAL. BUT I LOOKED AT THE PAST FOUR YEARS. THE PAST FOUR YEARS STUDENTS HAVE PAID OVER $3 BILLION IN INTEREST ON THE STUDENT DEBT. THEY’VE PROFITED OFF OF THE BACKS OF STUDENTS IN DEBT AND I GAVE YOU THAT EXAMPLE EARLIER. ON ONE HAND HE’S PROFITING ON THE BACKS OF STUDENT DEBT. BUT ON THE OTHER HAND IN ONE YEAR ALONE Mr. TRUDEAU AND THE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT WAIVED OR FORGAVE $6 BILLION IN CORPORATE LOANS. DID NEP ASK Mr. TRUDEAU IF HE COULD AFFORD TO WAIVE $6 BILLION IN CORPORATE LOANS? NO ONE ASKED. [Applause] SO A NUMBER OF STEPS. STEP ONE, RIGHT AWAY STUDENTS NEED RELIEF. ON DAY ONE OF A NEW DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT. WE CAN DO THIS RIGHT AWAY. IT WOULD TAKE NO EFFORT. RIGHT AWAY WE WOULD IMMEDIATELY WAIVE ALL INTERESTS, DAY ONE ON A NEW DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT. NO INTEREST ON ANY FEDERAL LOAN. RIGHT AWAY. STEP ONE. [Applause] RIGHT AWAY. STEP TWO, WE WOULD LOOK AT FORGIVING LOANS. IF WE CAN FORGIVE LOANS FOR CORPORATIONS, WE CAN FORGIVE LOANS FOR STUDENTS. SO WE’D LOOK AT LOAN FORGIVENESS. [Applause] STEP THREE, WE WANT TO REPLACE A LOAN SYSTEM WITH A GRANT SYSTEM. INSTEAD OF GIVING STUDENTS LOANS, LET’S GIVE STUDENTS GRANTS THAT ARE NON-REPAYABLE. [Applause] AND THEN FINALLY THIS IS A HARDER ONE. IT’S GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME, BUT I REALLY BELIEVE IN IT. I WANT TO WORK TOWARDS A FUTURE WHERE THERE ARE NO BARRIERES FOR KINDERGARTEN TO CAREER. THAT MEANS THERE’S NO BARRIERS IN EDUCATION AND THAT MEANS FREE TUITION. AND THAT’S WHAT I WANT TO WORK TOWARDS. [Cheering and Applause] THANK YOU. I TAKE IT THAT’S KIND OF POPULAR. LAST QUESTION, YEAH. HERE IT IS. OKAY. >> HI, I’M EVAN. AND I’M REALLY NERVOUS ABOUT PUBLIC SPEAKING. >> YOU HAVE THE SUPPORT OF THIS WHOLE ROOM. DON’T WORRY. [Applause] WHEN I FIRST MOVED OUT ONE OF THE FEW THINGS THAT WASN’T ON MY MIND WAS FINDING MY OWN FAMILY DOCTOR. I DIDN’T EVEN REALIZE THAT AS A YOUNG KID MOVING OUT THAT’S ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU HAD TO DO. SO WHEN I MOVED TO HALIFAX WE JUMPED INTO THE SYSTEM AND THREE YEARS LATER WE FINALLY HAVE A REALLY FANTASTIC NURSE PRACTITIONER THAT’S BEEN HELPING US OUT. BUT IT TOOK THREE YEARS TO GET THERE. >> WOW. >> AND EVEN AFTER THAT THREE YEARS WE’RE STILL WAITING FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE. A PSYCHOLOGIST OR A PSYCHIATRIST TO GIVE US THE HELP THAT WE REALLY NEED. IT’S BEEN THREE YEARS AND THAT ENTIRE TIME NOTHING GETS BETTER. IT JUST STAYS THE SAME. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT THE NDP PLANS TO DO TO MAYBE HELP KEEP DOCTORS AROUND, KEEP THEM IN NOVA SCOTIA OR MAYBE EVEN HELP TO CREATE MORE DOCTORS. >> THANK YOU FOR THE QUESTION. REALLY GOOD QUESTION. [Applause] THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT UP. PARTICULARLY IN ATLANTIC CANADA IT’S AN ISSUE. IN NOVA SCOTIA BUT NEW BRUNSWICK AS WELL PEOPLE ARE BRINGING THAT UP AS A MASSIVE CONCERN. IT’S A BIG CONCERN INPIPE AS WELL I KNOW. SO WHAT WE’VE GOT TO DO IS FIND WAYS TO MAKE SURE WE TRAIN AND RECOGNIZE THE TRAINING OF THOSE INTERNATIONALLY TRAINED DOCTORS AS WELL. MAKE SURE WE HAVE ENOUGH DOCTORS IN OUR COMMUNITIES. THAT’S ONE IMPORTANT THING. THE OTHER THING IS THAT IT’S A BIT OF AN INDIRECT THING, BUT IT’S VERY IMPORTANT AS WELL. WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE UNIVERSAL PHARMACARE PROGRAM, WHAT THAT WOULD DO IS ALLEVIATE A LOT OF WEIGHT AND MURDER ON THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, ALLOW PEOPLE TO GET MEDICATION THEY NEED TO GET TREATED, TO GET WELL. AND TAKING THAT BURDEN OFF THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM WILL FREE UP RESOURCES SO THAT WE CAN INVEST BACK INTO FRONTLINE CARE. THE PARLIAMENTARY BUDGET OFFICE SAID THAT PUTTING IN PLACE A UNIVERSAL PHARMACARE PROGRAM COULD SAVE AS MUCH AS $4.2 BILLION FEDERALLY. THEY DIDN’T FACTOR IN HOW MUCH IT COULD SAVE EACH PROVINCE, WHICH WOULD BEEN SIGNIFICANT. THAT’S ONE WAY TO REINVEST OR TO SAVE SOME MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF FUNDS THAT COULD BE REINVESTED BACK INTO FRONTLINE CARE, WHICH MEANS MORE NURSE PRACTITIONERS AND MORE DOCTORS. THAT’S SOME OF WHAT WE WANT TO DO. WE KNOW WE’RE GOING TO TACK THIS WILL. IT’S A PRIORITY. HEALTH CARE IS DEEPLY IMPORTANT TO MEDICAL, AND I BELIEVE IN OUR SYSTEM. I BELIEVE IN THE VISION OF CARE FOR EVERYONE. NO MATTER WHA >> CAN YOU ELABORATE? >> YES. [ Laughter ] >> THAT WAS VERY CLEAR, BUT I BELIEVE IN IT. I THINK — I SCENT A LETTER TO THE COMMISSIONER AND FOR THAT REASON, IF YOU LOOK AT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE ATTRACTED TO THE PARTY, THE VALUES THEY ARE YOU SPAZZING. I AGREE. I AGREE THAT WE SHOULD HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS, EVEN THOUGH I DON’T LIKE CONSERVATIVES THAT TALK ABOUT CUTTING TAXES. I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO SAY THAT AND I WILL PUSH BACK AND SAY YOU WILL CUT SERVICES FOR FAMILIES AND THAT WILL HURT. I BELIEVE WE SHOULD HAVE THAT DEBATE, BUT THAT SOME POINT IT GOES BEYOND AN EXCHANGE OF IDEAS TO IDEAS THAT ARE HATEFUL, THAT ARE GOING TO SPREAD DIVISION. THEY ARE GOING TO HURT COMMUNITIES AND THAT CANNOT BE ALLOWED. [ Applause ] >> IF THE PROVINCE WANTS A PIPELINE DO THEY GET TO OVERRIDE A VETO? >> OUR POSITION IS THIS. WE WOULD NOT IMPOSE PIPELINES ON ANY COMMUNITY. WE DON’T BELIEVE THAT IS THE WAY TO GO, WE DON’T BELIEVE THAT IS THE WAY TO REMOVE FORWARD SO WE WOULD NOT IMPOSE THAT. [ Applause ] [ Speaking French ] >> Voice of Translator: THE LIBERAL PARTY MADE A COMMITMENT TODAY, THAT THE LIBERAL PARTY WOULD LIKE TO CREATE A NEW PHARMA CARE SYSTEM. IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR PLAN AND THAT OF JUSTIN TRUDEAU? YES THERE IS A MAJOR DIFFERENCE, WE WILL DO IT. AND THEY ARE JUST TALKING, BUT OF COURSE THAT IS THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE. >> WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR PLAN AND THE LIBERAL PLAN? I SAID, WE WOULD GET IT DONE. THEY ARE JUST TALKING ABOUT IT. [ Speaking French ] >> Voice of Translator: BUT IN FACT I AM SERIOUS. FOR LIBERALS IT IS JUST WORDS. EMPTY WORDS, AND THEY DO THE SAME THING FOR EVERY ELECTION FOR THE PAST 23 YEARS. THE LIBERALS PROMISED TO SET UP FARMING CARE. IT IS SO EASY TO SAY THAT, BUT HOW CAN WE BELIEVE THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS ACTUALLY GOING TO DO IT? ALSO, WE KNOW THAT THEY ARE ONLY WORKING FOR THE RICHEST, FOR THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES AND NOT FOR THE PEOPLE. I DON’T WORK FOR THE RICH. I AM HERE FOR YOU. [ Applause ] >> Voice of Translator: IS THERE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOU BETWEEN THE LIBERAL PLATFORM AND THE CONSERVATIVE PLATFORM, OR IS IT WANTED THE SAME THING? I LIKE WHAT YOU SAID AT THE END. I AM GOING TO LEARN THIS FROM YOU. IN FACT,, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN TERMS OF RHETORIC. MR TRUDEAU IS USING NICE WORDS, ANDREW SCHEER IS USING WORDS THAT ARE MAYBE LESS NICE, BUT IN TERMS OF RESULTS THEY ARE BOTH CUTTING SERVICES, THEY ARE BOTH WORKING FOR THE WEALTHY, AND IT HAS BEEN THE SAME FOUR YEARS. THE GOVERNMENT IN OTTAWA IS FAVOURING THE WEALTHY PEOPLE WHO ARE RICH, INSTEAD OF FAVOURING THE WORKERS AND REGULAR PEOPLE. SO THIS IS NOT FAIR AND WE WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE THIS. WOULD YOU MIND ELABORATING ON YOUR PLAN, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LIBERAL AND YOUR PLAN IN ENGLISH? >> SO THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LIBERAL PLAN ON FARMING CARE AND THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PLAN ON FARMING CARE IS THAT WE WOULD ACTUALLY GET THE PLAN DONE. THAT IS A BIG DIFFERENCE. [ Applause ] >> THEY ARE JUST GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT AND THINK A LOT OF PROMISES, THEY HAVE BEEN PROMISING FOR 23 YEARS. IT WOULD BE ABSURD TO BELIEVE THEM NOW. AFTER REALLY CLEAR EVIDENCE, ONE CLEAR EXAMPLE IS THAT THEY LITERALLY PROMISED JUST TO CHANGE THE LIST OF COUNTRIES. IT’S NOT A BIG PROMISE. THERE IS A BOARD, IT IS A BOARD THAT REVIEWS THE PRICE OF MEDICATION. THAT BOARD MADE A REQUEST, SAYING WE CAN FIND BETTER PRICES FOR MEDICATION IF YOU GIVE US THE LEGISLATION, LEGISLATE US A NEW LIST OF COUNTRIES AND WE CAN ACTUALLY SET BETTER PRICES. THAT WAS A GOOD PROMISE. MR TRUDEAU PROMISED TO DO IT. IN FOUR YEARS HE DID NOT DO IT. IT COST ZERO DOLLARS. IT WOULD HAVE ZERO COSTS TO DO. WHY DID HE BREAK THAT PROMISE? BECAUSE HE DOESN’T WORK FOR PEOPLE. HE WORKS FOR THE POWERFUL. SO I DON’T BELIEVE HIM. I DON’T THINK CANADIANS BELIEVE HIM. I DON’T THINK THE POWERFUL PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES IN THE INSURANCE LOBBIES ARE GOING TO LET HIM DO IT. I DON’T WORK FOR THOSE GUYS. I WORK FOR ALL OF YOU. [ Applause ] >> THANK YOU, JUST A FOLLOW-UP. THAT’S A VERY AMBITIOUS TARGET. HOW DO YOU GET THE OTHER PROVINCES TO SIGN ON IN THE TIMEFRAME YOU HAVE LAID OUT? >> VERY FAIR QUESTION. IT’S GOING TO BE HARD. I’M NOT SAYING — NOTHING AMBITIOUS AND NOTHING BOLD IS EASY. THIS IS WHAT I WOULD DO. I WOULD SIT DOWN WITH ANY PREMIER IN CANADA, EVEN THE WORST PREMIERS, THEY MIGHT NOT HE WANTS YOU WOULD THINK THAT WOULD LIKE THIS IDEA. I WOULD SAY TO THEM, THEY ARE ALREADY SPENDING MONEY ON MEDICATION. EVERY PROVINCE HAS A BUDGET, THEY ARE ACTUALLY BUYING MEDICATION IN BULK FOR HOSPITALS BECAUSE THEY ARE COVERED. WHEN YOU GO TO A HOSPITAL MEDICATION IS COVERED SO YOU’RE PROVINCES ARTY SPENDING A CERTAIN BUDGET ON MEDICATION. WE WOULD SIT DOWN WITH THE PROVINCE AND SAY, FOR NOT A CENT MORE, YOU DON’T PUT ANY MORE MONEY, EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE ALREADY SPENDING. INSTEAD OF COVERING SOME PEOPLE YOU CAN COVER EVERYONE. I CAN’T IMAGINE ANY PREMIER WHO COULD POSSIBLY SAY NO TO THAT. THAT IS OUR PLAN. [ Applause ] >> HI, STEPHEN COOK. JUST CURIOUS, IS THERE A MODEL FOR THE FORM A CARE PLAN YOU ARE PUTTING FORWARD? HAS IT WORKED IN ANOTHER COUNTRY, SOMETHING SIMILAR TO IT OR IN THE SAME SPIRIT? FOR A LENGTHY PERIOD OF TIME? >> YES, THE UNITED KINGDOM, GERMANY, SWEDEN, NEW ZEALAND. ALL THE COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD THAT HAVE A UNIVERSAL FARMING CARE ARE — OR UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE ALREADY HAVE IT. WE ARE IN FACT THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE ENTIRE WORLD THAT HAS A UNIVERSAL FARMING CARE, CIM ALREADY STEPPING AHEAD. ROLE THAT BACK. WE ARE THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WITH A UNIVERSAL MEDICARE THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE A UNIVERSAL FARMING CARE. IN FACT THERE ARE A LOT OF COUNTRIES THAT HAVE CREATED MODELS AND THAT IS WHERE WE BORROWED OUR PLAN FROM. WE LOOK AT THE OTHER COUNTRIES AND SAID, THEY ALL ALREADY DOING IT. WE USED THE PARLIAMENTARY BUDGET AND LOOKED AT IT WOULD BE A SAVINGS OF $4.2 BILLION IF WE PUT IT IN PLACE. WE JUST HAVE TO DO IT. IT JUST TAKES COURAGE. I’VE GOT THE COURAGE TO DO IT. [ Cheering ] >> FROM CBC NOVA SCOTIA. THE NDP WAS SHUT OUT OF ATLANTIC CANADA BY THE LIBERALS LAST ELECTION. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET VOTERS WHO SWITCHED FROM THE NDP TO THE LIBERALS TO COME BACK TO YOU? >> WELL, WE LOOK AT THE PAST FOUR YEARS. WE ASK PEOPLE IN NOVA SCOTIA, PEOPLE IN HALIFAX, PEOPLE IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, ASKED PEOPLE ACROSS ATLANTIC CANADA. HAS YOUR LIFE IMPROVED UNDER MR TRUDEAU? AND HAVE THE MAJOR CONCERNS YOU ARE FACED WITH IN HEALTHCARE AND HOUSING, HAVE YOU SEEN REAL ACTION TO IMPROVE YOUR LIVES? AND PRETTY CONFIDENT MOST PEOPLE IN ATLANTIC CANADA WILL SAY NO. AND I WILL ASK YOU, DO YOU MISS HAVING A NEW DEMOCRAT ON YOUR SIDE FIGHTING FOR YOU? [ Applause ] >> I’M PRETTY SURE THEY’RE GOING TO SAY YES. >> A FOLLOW-UP… YOU TALKED ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR PHARMA CARE PLAN AND THE LIBERALS. COULD YOU TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR PLAN AND THE GREENS? >> ANOTHER TREND WITH OTHER PARTIES, INCLUDING THAT YOU MENTIONED, THEY ARE TELLING CANADIANS TO WAIT. THEY ARE SAYING, WAIT TEN YEARS OR EIGHT YEARS, AND WHAT THAT MEANS, IT HAS A COST. FOR FAMILIES THAT ARE SPENDING IN SOME CASES A THOUSAND DOLLARS OR MORE A MONTH, I MET A WOMAN IN HAMILTON WHO IS SPENDING ON HER DIABETES MEDICATION, SHE IS SPENDING ABOUT $500 A MONTH WITH ALL THE COSTS. SO FOR HER THAT IS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT YEAR. SO EFFECTIVELY IF THAT IS GOING TO COST, FOR FAMILIES SPENDING SAY A THOUSAND DOLLARS A MONTH, OVER A PERIOD OF TEN YEARS, HOW MUCH ARE THEY ASKING PEOPLE TO WAIT? HOW MUCH MONEY ARE THEY ASKING THEM TO SPEND BEFORE PEOPLE GET THE CARE THEY NEED? THE DIFFERENCES, WE ARE NOT TELLING PEOPLE TO WAIT. WE ARE SAYING WE BELIEVE IT CAN BE DONE. WE WILL GET IT DONE NOW. WE HAVE A PLAN AND THE COURAGE TO PAY FOR IT, AND WE KNOW CANADIANS NEED IT. AND THAT’S WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO. [ Applause ] >> HELLO. WE HAD CLIMATE ACTION RALLY IT ON FRIDAY THAT I ATTENDED, AND SO MANY PEOPLE EXPRESSED FRUSTRATION OVER ALL THE TALK ON DEALING WITH THE CLIMATE CRISIS BUT A ZERO ACTION. I HEARD THIS REPEATEDLY FROM THE AVERAGE PEOPLE WHO WERE THERE IN ATTENDANCE, AND ACTUALLY ONE TEENAGE GIRL TOLD ME SHE WAS SO DISHEARTENED AND DISCOURAGED, AND SAID IF YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO ONE OF THE LEADERS, PLEASE ASK THEM WHAT IT IS THAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO TO GIVE THEM HOPE FOR TRUE ACTION, AND NOT SOMETHING MORE TALK. SO WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE PEOPLE? >> I WOULD SAY I UNDERSTAND YOU’RE FRUSTRATED. IT IS REALLY FRUSTRATING. WE HAVE GOT GOVERNMENTS THAT HAVEN’T ACTED, WE HAVE LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES THAT HAVE IGNORED THIS PROBLEM. THAT HAVE SAID ON ONE HAND, MR TRUDEAU’S EXAMPLE, ON ONE HAND THERE IS A CLAIM IN EMERGENCY ON MONDAY. AND THEN ON THE TUESDAY, HE VOTED TO EXPAND BUILDING MORE PIPELINES AND BRITISH COLUMBIA. I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THAT IS POSSIBLE. YOU HAVE TRUDEAU WHO INSPIRED A LOT OF PEOPLE AND THEN SPENT PUBLIC DOLLARS, OUR PUBLIC TAXPAYER DOLLARS, ON BUYING A PIPELINE. THAT IS VERY UNDERSTANDABLE WHY PEOPLE ARE FRUSTRATED. HE CAMPAIGNED TO END FOSSIL FUELS SUBSTANCES. BUT MEETING WITH THAT BIG OIL AND GAS LOBBYISTS, OVER 1500 TIMES IN FOUR YEARS, HE BROKE THAT COMMITMENT AND THERE CONTINUE TO BE MASSIVE FOSSIL FUEL SUBSIDIES THAT WE ARE PAYING FOR WITH OUR PUBLIC DOLLARS. I WOULD SAY THAT YOUNG PERSON, WITH ME IN CHARGE, I WOULD END FOSSIL FUEL SUBSIDIES RIGHT AWAY. I WOULD END THEM RIGHT AWAY. I WOULD REINVEST THAT MONEY, I WOULD REINVEST THAT MONEY INTO CLEAN ENERGY, RENEWABLE ENERGY. I WOULD BUILD PUBLIC TRANSIT, ELECTRIFIED TRANSPORTATION. I WOULD RETROFIT EVERY HOME AND BUILDING SO THAT WE REDUCE OUR EMISSIONS AND SAVE FAMILIES MONEY AND CREATE JOBS AND COMMUNITIES. THERE IS SO MUCH WE CAN DO TOGETHER AND I WOULD MAKE IT HAPPEN. [ Applause ] >> CAN YOU JUST JOINED ME FOR ONE LAST THING? THE MEDIA DO A TOUGH JOB, THEY HAVE TO ASK QUESTIONS. IT IS A TOUGH CLIMATE FOR MEDIA. IF YOU COULD JOIN ME IN GIVING THEM SOME LOVE AND APPLAUSE, THEY ARE DOING AN IMPORTANT JOB. [ Cheering ] >> THANK YOU EVERYBODY! I APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU, THANK YOU! LOVE YOU ALL.
