Life Lion: Critical Care In The Air – Penn State Hershey Medical Center

>> Life Lion Operations is a service that’s
offered seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We offer critical care transport both by air
and ground services. We actually do a multiple various types of
flights from on-scene to specialty care flights from hospital to hospital, and we go and pick
patients up at numerous sending facilities and take them to various receiving facilities. We actually have services offered at two locations. The one is the Hershey Medical Center, campus
of the Penn State College of Medicine, and there we offer both air and ground critical
care transport capabilities, and then our satellite base at the Carlisle Regional Airport
we offer another 24-hour, 7 day a week, 365-day air service. We fly two aircraft 24 hours a day, and then
we have a third aircraft that we use for a maintenance reserve aircraft to keep the service
functioning 24 hours a day. Crew configuration for the Life Lion helicopters
consist of a pilot, a specially trained nurse and a specially trained paramedic. And support in that is mechanical staff for
the aircraft and then also support staff from the communications center. Response times for flights, get the helicopter
out and actually in the air for our emergency flights is typically four to five minutes,
and then for interfacilities where we call and talk to the sending institution and make
sure we’re bringing in the right crew members and also the right equipment, is approximately
ten minutes.
