Meet Dr. Jessica Heckman, Family Medicine Physician

[MUSIC PLAYING] My name is Jessica Heckman. I’m a family physician over here
at Family Medicine of Lincoln. The first thing that got me
into the field of medicine was growing up, spending Summers
in a small town in Nebraska. I noticed, whenever we’d go
to the family physician there, just how helpful they were. And how much of a
difference they could make. And that started
peaking my interest in the field of
medicine, initially, and it just sort of
continued from there. I knew I wanted to go into
medicine pretty early on. I got advice that
said, you really have to be certain about what
specialty you want to pick. And so, family
medicine was something that I spent a long time
really, evaluating to make sure that it was the right fit. And I’ve grown to love it
more and more over the years. And it’s just been
the perfect fit. My favorite thing
about family medicine is the epitome of
family medicine. Being able to see every
member of the family. The fact that I can see four
generations of one family, going from a baby who’s
one-day-old to a 91-year-old great-grandmother. And really, the
emotional connection that you make with that
family along the way as you’re really learning their history. And it gives you that
little extra clue sometimes, to figure out what’s
going on and get to where you need to go. The number one thing I think,
in terms of my approach to medicine is, it’s
a team-based approach, in my mind. I’m not here to
tell you what to do. I’m here to be your
medical teammate and to walk that path together. To say, based upon
things that I’ve learned, this is what I
think is going on. These are the
options that I have. Usually, if I have a
strong opinion about one, I’m going to present
that to you and say, I think we need to do this. I try to make people definitely,
have an understanding about what is happening and why. And let them take an active
role in their health. Honestly, the atmosphere
here is different than anywhere I’ve ever worked. It’s got a very
jovial atmosphere. The best part of it has
been the camaraderie. I’ve really come to
appreciate the fact that I can have such
an open dialogue and just easily approach
any of my partners. It’s something that’s intrinsic
to helping this practice be as good as it can be.
