NIH Clinical Center: A Guide for Patients Entering Campus

welcome to the National Institutes of Health clinical Center our patients call us the house of hope you're coming to a very special place but also very big in fact we're the world's largest hospital dedicated to clinical research arriving to NIH for the first time can be overwhelming so we want to provide a streamlined way to help you your family and your visitors into campus in preparing for your trip don't forget to bring the following we encourage everyone to leave some wiggle room in their schedule to go through security and park and leave other belongings behind the NIH Clinical Center is part of the federal government we take extra security measures to keep you our employees and our buildings safe you may see a friendly police officer or one of our furry companions everyone must pass through security upon entering campus patients visitors and even staff your bag is packed now come walk or ride along with us to the clinical center known as building 10 there's a special entrance for patients and their guests it's open every day including weekends from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. the entrance is at the intersection of West Cedar Lane and West Drive the address is 5300 West Cedar Lane while you can plug this into your GPS unfortunately the technology isn't always reliable GPS may not realize that NIH has gates around the perimeter it may attempt to divert you through campus instead of bringing you to the patient entrance when you arrive the process is similar to an airport inspection everyone should exit the car be prepared to bring your luggage into the screening facility service animals are welcome your belongings will be scanned and helpful staff will assist you through a metal detector after checking your ID they will issue you a one-day security pass this interest is only for patients whether you're arriving for the first time or it's your fifth visit members of your family and visitors are welcomed to the clinical center is less than a minutes drive from the patient entrance on the way you'll pass the Children's in it's a truly magical place for pediatric patients and their families to stay for free during their care once you get here there are two options for parking both are free valet service is available Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. or you can park your own car in our garage conveniently located under the building arriving after hours not to worry there's an entrance just down the street it's called the commercial vehicle inspection facility if you are arriving by bus or by the Washington metro rail you will use another entrance called the Gateway Center it's open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday NIH visitors also use this entrance patients and their guests can use it too depending on the day it can become quite crowded leave some time in your schedule to get through after you receive your visitor's pass shuttle buses can take you to the clinical center if you're arriving on the weekend by metro or bus you can use the patient assistance form it's similar to what's on college campuses or enlarged parking garages the blue call box connects you to NIH dispatch representatives to assist with entering campus we hope this video gives you an idea of what to expect at our entrances and the security process once you get here you can apply for an extended visitor badge this will make entering campus even easier for your follow-up appointments we have a map and other resources for you online please don't hesitate to reach out to any healthcare team member with any questions we look forward to serving you with the best quality care here at the NIH Clinical Center
