Pet Pointers: Can you give your pets medicine meant for humans?

WE’RE BACK IN THREE MINUTES — WITH MORE LOCAL NEWS, WEATHER AND TRAFFIC. MONICA BUT FIRST — THIS WEEK’S PET POINTER IS ABOUT MEDICINES THAT ARE TOXIC TO DOGS. MATT: BOB NUNNALLY HAS ADVICE FROM A VETERINARIAN ON HOW TO TREAT YOUR PET AFTER HOURS. BOB NUNNALLY: “WE’RE WITH DOCTOR DEHAAN AT SOS OHIO AND WE’RE GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT MAY BE A LITTLE TOUGH SUBJECT FOR SOME PEOPLE TOO, ABOUT NOT GIVING YOUR PETS HUMAN MEDICINE, EVEN IF THEY’RE INJURED.” DR. MELANIE DEHAAN/SOS OF OHIO: “YEAH I MEAN ITS SUMMERTIME, SO WE GET A LOT OF INJURIES, YOU TAKE YOUR DOGS HIKING, SOMETIMES AT NIGHT, AND YOUR VETERINARIAN IS NOT ALWAYS OPEN SO IF YOUR DOG COMES HOME LIMPING PEOPLE WILL SOMETIMES BE CONCERNED AND GIVE THEIR DOG SOMETHING LIKE TYLENOL, ASPIRIN, OTHER NSAID THAT THEY HAVE.” BOB NUNNALLY: “THIS IS ALL A NO NO.” DR. DEHAAN: “NO YOU DONT WANT TO DO THAT, AND ITS NOT THAT YOU CAN’T EVER GIVE A DOG ASPIRIN, BUT ITS CONTRA- INDICATED FOR A LOT OF THINGS IN DOGS SO WITHOUT VETERINARY GUIDANCE, YOU DONT WANT TO. TYLENOL IS VERY VERY TOXIC AND DANGEROUS TO DOGS IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS AS WELL, SO ARE A LOT OF THE HUMAN NARCOTICS, SO ITS JUST PROBABLY BETTER TO LET YOUR DOG LIMP UNTIL YOU CAN TALK TO YOUR VET. ICE PACK, KEEP THEM CAGE RESTED, IF THERE’S ANY OPEN WOUNDS OBVIOUSLY YOU WANT TO BANDAGE THOSE, ADDRESS THOSE OR GO TO A 24 HOUR EMERGENCY CLINIC, BUT I THINK PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE HOW TOXIC SOME OF THOSE DRUGS CAN BE.” BOB NUNNALLY: “THAT’S ANOTHER GREAT PET POINTER, THANK YOU VERY MUCH DR. DEHAAN. FROM SOS OF OHIO, LOCAL FOR YOU, I’M BOB NUNNALLY, NBC4.” BREAK BREAK #2 BREAK
