Pittsburgh, Allegheny County Sue Pharmaceutical Companies For Opioid Crisis

THEY FOUND ALL KINDS OF DRUG MAKING MATERIAL IN OUR ROOM THERE WHERE A 3-YEAR-OLD WAS ALSO STAYING. NO ARRESTS WERE MADE IN THAT CASE YET. LOCAL LEADERS CALL IT A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS, THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC HAS HIT THE AREA HARD, THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH AT — AND ALLEGHANY COUNTY HAS FILED A LAWSUIT TO GO AFTER THOSE WHO THEY SAY IS RESPONSIBLE. MARTY GRIFFIN HAS THE DETAILS. Reporter: IT WAS LATE LAST YEAR IN DOWNTOWN PITTSBURGH ON THE STREET IN FRONT OF A HOTEL. A YOUNG WOMAN OVERDOSE, A FRIEND WHO DIDN’T WANT TO APPEAR ON CAMERA TRIED TO SAVE HER. I ATTEMPTED TO GIVE HER RESCUE BREATHING UNTIL THE PARAMEDICS GOT THERE. THEY USED NARCAN TO SAVE HER LIFE, SHE WALKED AWAY, MOST HEROIN ADDICTS START WITH OPIOIDS. IT IS TIME TO GO AFTER THE OPIOID BENEFACTORS. TODAY, ALLEGHANY COUNTY AND PITTSBURGH WENT AFTER THOSE COUNTIES WHO SAY THAT IT HAS COSTED THE COUNTY AND CITY MILLIONS. FROM THINGS LIKE OUR JAIL IN DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES, EMS, 911, ALL THOSE PLACES THAT SPEND MONEY AS THE RESULT OF THE ABUSE OF THESE DRUGS AND THE OVERDOSES. Reporter: THEY SUED EIGHT MYSTICAL COMPANIES THE BIGGEST IN THE OPIOID BUSINESS, THEY BOTH ALSO BROUGHT IN OUT-OF- STATE, OUT-OF-STATE — OUT OF COUNTY COUNSEL. WE WOULD LIKE TO BE RECOUPED FOR THE TAXPAYERS DOLLARS. AND WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A HAND IN THE WAY THAT WE CHANGE THIS IS SO THAT WE DO NOT HAVE THIS CONTINUED FLOOD OF PRESCRIPTIONS FOR DISEASES AND ELEMENTS THAT DON’T REALLY CALL FOR OPIOID ASKED — UPGRADE PRESCRIPTIONS ANNUALLY. Reporter: THE COUNT IS STARING. THEY HOPE THAT IT SENDS A MESSAGE.
