Science Today: Crow Intelligence | California Academy of Sciences

we all know that chimpanzees and dolphins are very intelligent animals but it’s now time to add another surprising animal to that list crows researchers have determined that like humans but unlike most other animals curves can use tools and undergo complex reasoning in order to obtain food in one study researchers presented crows with meat that they would need to use a tool to get all crows in this experiments figured out how to obtain the tool and then how to use it to get meat amazingly some crows did this on the first attempt showing a level of reasoning more complex that even trial and error this means crows may be even smarter than the great apes the part of the brain that we use for intelligence is relatively undeveloped in Birds and so for a long time scientists felt that birds must not be that intelligent but these studies of tool use and crows is telling us something very different and in fact it’s rethinking about the way that crows use their brains as well as the way we might be using our brains it’s a really active area of research that’s that’s growing rapidly and I expect a lot of a very exciting breakthroughs in the next decade or so so the next time you see a crow in a park see if you can spot behavior that might tell you just what that crow is thinking you

  1. I'm going into suspended animation, so I can watch the epic raven vs. octopi war in the far future after humanity kills itself.

  2. there is a story , not a tale , talk about Raven or crow intelligence, it is called : crow and the water–crow used a pile of little stone to make the low water in bottle higher for drinking. We also can see, they always hunting in two or above and another partner is watching them for safety afar too when getting out. 🙂

  3. I always love : crow, and love bird, and almost all parrots, because they not only can think like us, do objects to get what they want, happier than us, most of all, most of them also can talking and sing songs when glad. 🙂

  4. while most human being fear public show and speaking , so, we lack money , communication, better life than even them. we also always fighting with our loved one and hard to find or not knowing how to keep wonderful relationship due to mean in talk.

  5. I had a pet crow recently she fell out of her nest into my garden so I decided to take care of her before I knew it she knew my house off by heart I'd be like ill be back in a minute just going upstairs then wen I am going back down I see her at the top of stairs waiting for me to go down

  6. I've noticed a number of times that crows will put out a "road guard" on a curve while others feed off a road kill just around the curve. The road guard will warn the others of a coming vehicle. I've even seen crows switch places so the the first road guard can get it's share of the meal.

  7. Virtually all Humans have been animals before, it becomes part of our personality. So by extension animals are smart too, because they were other animals before. As souls, we exist FOREVER.

  8. Octopi can't pass on their experience to their kids. The male gtfo after the mating and the female dies right after laying her eggs under a rock and taking care of them. So octopi should encounter a few problems.

  9. The crows that fly around my local grocery store, when they find a can of peanuts or any kind of nut, they'll put the can in the way of a driving car and wait for one to crush it before flying off with the can of opened nuts. They are very smart indeed.

  10. They could always tell another octopus, "Teach my kids. And avenge my death, Priscilla!"

Or maybe they leave instructions in some other way we overlook (one of those smells it kind of hears, perhaps). A human has about as much chance at understanding an octopus in octopus terms as Priscilla does understanding you in yours.

  11. You know nothing, Chad Thomas. Ravens have three eyes. And that's the bottom line, 'cause Old Nan said so!

  12. Probably the fastest evolving bird species.
There are quite a few fish and lizards species that out rank the crow here…not to mention microscopic species and types of flora that out rank the vertebrates altogether.

  13. Another octopus. You can call her Doris or Mary-Beth, if you'd like.

Her true name, if it exists, probably doesn't translate well to English.

Just don't call her late for dinner, eh?

  14. Fruit flies are something like the kings of rapid evolution. That's why they're used in experiments so often. Also helps that people generally don't mind medical torture on insects.

  15. You cannot be THAT smart, you drove into an accident.. -_- we all make mistakes no matter how high our IQ is..

  16. I'm on my iPhone it posted my comment before I finished but long story short the crow flew in front of my car and I murdered him with my SUV

  17. You got surprisingly many dislikes on that comment. I assume it is because most people didn't bother to read the first one you posted and automatically assumed you killed the crow for fun. Goes to show how stupid some people are. And by the way the crow could have misinterpreted your cars velocity. Even a lot of people do this commonly.

  18. Crows' problem solving skills are well documented… They will indeed look at a problem and solve it in their heads rather than going for trial and error.

  19. What gives you the idea that humanity will destroy itself? That doesn't make any sense considering we live in a time with the least violence, most intelligence, and safest living conditions. With each century, things have gotten progressively better for humanity in every aspect. Not to mention thanks to scientific advancements, we could eventually colonize other planets, making us less dependent on Earth.

  20. Not sure if that's meant to be an insult but if so, please come up with something more intelligent than that petty retort. It doesn't even make any sense considering people in first world countries tend to be the more intelligent. It's not due to race or anything like that, but it's because first world countries have the most resources available to them.

  21. Not an insult per say. I just think your view is a little naive. Nothing you said is exactly wrong, but it is definitely rose-tinted, and certainly doesn't apply to all 'humanity' in equal measure. Violence in the middle east for instance is as bad, if not worse, than ever and it's all thanks to western greed. Often as not for every advance in one place, someone is being trampled on elsewhere. It is easy to sit in a western nation and imagine the world is on the verge of utopia.

  22. There's a reason why there is unrest in the middle east, and I agree that America has no business invading those countries. Violence in the middle east has grown because those people have been raised with ideas of racial intolerance and aversion to advancements in the world; because of the dangerous religious extremist beliefs, most people there want a theocracy, so of course those people would be up in arms as a lot of the world evolves beyond the silliness of religion and racism.

  23. There are extremists, and then there are the people of peace. It doesn't change the fact that they are raised with Islamic dogma and propaganda. The people who DO actively follow it promote racial intolerance, and are against societal and scientific advancements. You seem to be going out of your way to glorify the middle east and bash the U.S. I think it is shameful for the U.S. to force itself upon them, but there have always been heavy conflicts there before WWII when the U.S. got involved.

  24. And to reference your second response to this conversation, all violence in the middle east is most certainly not due to U.S. greed. Some of it, most definitely, but not all, that's just silly. The contributing factor of the unrest is intolerance of other people's religion and culture. The Jews and Muslims have been at each other's throats for a long time. You blatantly ignore this huge factor which suggests you're one of those people who hate America just because it's cool.

  25. I cannot stress enough that I believe the U.S. should not be policing the world because it wastes resources, wastes soldiers, and at the end of the day, makes the U.S. look silly. I recognize the faults AND good attributes of both the U.S. and middle eastern countries. But this conversation has been slightly derailed, so I think it's time to end it here.

  26. I think you will find it the other way around
We have a Rook called Jackie 13 years and now a Crow / Raven 5 months old and they command our lives,

  27. lol I read the uploader's comment days ago but didn't bother to reply because I was still wondering why he didn't answer me! XD

  28. amusing you live in the US you can have a pet crow but it must be from another country check out The Corvid Ranch were you can order a domestic crow legal to have in the US.

  29. People do keep crows as pets. But, since they are wildlife it is in most regions prohibited to just snag the young birds from the nest. (Although it is perfectly legal to kill them in atrocious ways). Keep in mind if you want a crow as pet, aside if it is legal, they are really noisy. As a volunteer in a wildlife rescue centre, in summer I do see a few young crows come in that people tried to domesticate and were tired of the mess and noise the young birds make. I think they are best in the wild

  30. "If you take away anything from this class, let it be this: DO NOT, fuck with crows. They remember faces for their entire lives. And if they see you again, they'll come for you. Long after you've forgotten, they'll remember, and they'll be waiting for revenge."

  31. as we are all multidimensional beings I just wonder if intelligence has much less to do with apparent brain size than we think.
You heard it here first 🙂

  32. Surah 5:31 Then Allah sent a raven, who scratched the ground, to show him how to hide the shame of his brother. "Woe is me!" said he; "Was I not even able to be as this raven, and to hide the shame of my brother?" then he became full of regrets-

  33. 5:27
And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah ], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], "I will surely kill you." Said [the former], "Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].
If you should raise your hand against me to kill me – I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah , Lord of the worlds.
Indeed I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers."
And his soul permitted to him the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers.
Then Allah sent a CROW searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.

  34. lol intelligence has nothing to do with the brain. Human has got it all wrong with their dead science in working and explaining with the consciousness

  35. The Quran speaks about how the crow showed one of the sons of Prophet Adam (Allah give him peace) as to how to “burry” his dead brother in this verse. Discoveries today uncover that there is a special relation between human intelligence and the crow something the Quran has already indicated towards in this verse. The National Geographic News says, “Savage's book, Crows: Encounters with the Wise Guys of the Avian World (October 2005),explores the burgeoning field of crow research, which suggests that the birds share with humans several hallmarks of higher intelligence, including tool use and sophisticated social behavior.”
Quran [5:31] “Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the dead body of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful
    Crow in Arabic is (Ghurab)

  36. "see if you can spot behavior to tell you just what that crow is thinking"

Crow: "Damn, you know what'd be really hilarious? If I found the biggest dogs in the park, bit their tails, then flew away…"

  37. I was driving one day and a crow swooped down and dropped an acorn in front of my car so I could crack it open for them! They really are clever creatures.

  38. Bloody Allah just has to get in on crows and Corvids like they love any living creature? Allah hates dogs, thinks they are Satan (especially black dogs) can you imagine a human loving, loyal, companiable, empathetic black Labrador as Satan?!, ridiculous. Leave our Crows alone!! 2017 UK

  39. When you've watched the 5th video that says that the crow is a "surprising" member of the intelligent animals…

  40. Once i gave a cookie to a crow. He ate some bite first then dipped the biscuit on water then ate it.
    I was standing shocked!

  41. Qur’an Speak About Smartest Bird on Earth. Here is the verse which is part of the story of the sons of Adam, Cane and Able: “The (selfish) soul of the other led him to the murder of his brother: he murdered him, and became (himself) one of the lost ones. Then Allah sent a raven(a black crow), who scratched the ground, to show him how to hide the shame of his brother. “Woe is me!” said he; “Was I not even able to be as this raven, and to hide the shame of my brother?” then he became full of regrets-“ (Qur’an, 5:30-31).
