Should You Be Taking Vitamin Supplements?

Vitamins and minerals are important for development,
normal body functions and overall well-being. True vitamin and mineral deficiencies are
rare among adults in the United States, but we still spend over 30 billion dollars a year
on supplements. And while taking a multivitamin isn’t harmful,
there’s no consistent evidence that taking a multivitamin can help prevent or reverse
disease in healthy adults without vitamin deficiencies. However, it is possible to take too many vitamins. Our bodies can’t make vitamins and minerals,
so it’s important that we take them in from our diet. The best way to ensure that you’re getting
enough vitamins and minerals in your diet is to eat a balanced diet full of fruits,
vegetables, whole grains and proteins, and to limit salt, sugar and processed foods.
