The Ingredient That Could Be Causing Your Depression and Anxiety



[Applause] headline excel wanna make you check your medicine cabinet OTC pain relievers and other medications when they're used properly they're safe but there's a surprising ingredient in them it may be contributing to your anxiety and depression could it be that what you're taking right now could have this ingredient I've got five warning signs you need to know about plus the new food fixes they can help you break through your anxiety and depression so we're gonna start off with a short 30-second mini quiz y'all up for this all right keep track of whether or not you have any of these five warning signs right does your heart feel like it's racing pitter-patter pitter-patter pitter-patter do you sometimes have trouble sleeping it's pretty common right how about an upset stomach once in a while yeah you feel jittery didn't be all over the place can't quite get comfortable a lot of a lot of heads nodding there and what about headaches headaches especially in the morning right so board certified family physician and woman who specializes in mental health Jennifer Connell is here she's joining us so I think it's time we reveal what ingredients in our over-the-counter medications could be causing all that anxiety all those symptoms I just mentioned I port say I think it's time to absolutely well Believe It or Not that substance is caffeine believe it or not caffeine can actually cause any or all of the symptoms that you just mentioned and ask people about you know this is a substance that's often overlooked we happiness in coffee beans yeah like this list kind of caffeine right here caffeine right here it's often overlooked but it's a psychoactive substance that can cause or exacerbate anxiety and a lot of people don't realize it's actually found in so many medications that we're familiar with up to 80 medications have caffeine in them so believe it or not that's what we're talking about caffeine you know why they had caffeine these medications makes it work better it's amazing but it's actually a very powerful tool but it can also hurt you if you don't know what's in there so how much caffeine are we talking about he's over the counter products so it definitely varies depending on what substance or medication that we're talking about but let's use an example there's a popular over-the-counter migraine medication for example if we take that medication maximum amounts it actually has the equivalent of five cups of coffee in terms of caffeine in that medication yeah I don't trust that dose that dose maximum amount it's the equivalent caffeine as five cups of coffee which is really it kind of blows your mind I think I'll do the caffeine calculus room help me understand how concerning this could be over the course of a day so caffeine the caffeine calculus is really this idea that we've got to do the math if we're taking an over-the-counter medication or any medication for that matter with caffeine in it but then we get our latte our cappuccino etc etc we may not be keeping track of the amount of caffeine we're taking in and we could really be getting into risky territory we know that too much caffeine can cause anxiety can cause other symptoms it can interact with other medications so this caffeine calculus is the idea that we've got to keep track we've got to do the math and keep up with it so Jean is joining us Georgina actually told me how are you so you watch me walk the gauntlet with those five key symptoms of anxiety you felt some of those things I understand definitely which one specifically a bothering you headaches jitteriness racing heart definitely and I don't sleep sieve four out of five yeah mortify Wow so we are assured you need to keep a track of all the things she was eating all the products she was taking the things you drank all that you did that for us yep you ready to do the math with us come on over go do the math together this is this is how everyone at home should do their caffeine calculus all right very simple easy to figure out how much caffeine you've ingested over the course of the day so let's say you've got migraine headaches right have you ever had migraine every day every day so you took two pills they can roll me do weed looked in the into it and turns out there's about 130 milligrams of caffeine how do 30 milligrams of caffeine is like two and a half cups of coffee right then you actually stop on your way to work and you get a cup of coffee right which in your case has to be more powerful one so it's a hundred milligrams of coffee then a couple hours later you end up with more than migraine headaches two more of these lil pills 130 milligrams extra then you decide you want a grande latte why not right hey so good doesn't buttery in your mouth gives a little extra energy surge hundred fifty milligrams here a soda pop if it if it's a diet soda pop and without the sugar so how's the caffeine in it right that's about 42 milligrams and then later in the evening because you have those migraines quite a bit which we all be talking about that's another 130 milligrams if you add all this together you're enough taking 682 milligrams of caffeine you know what that is that's one day yeah that's one one day we usually tell people to try to stay under 200 milligrams of caffeine right again that's three cups of coffee in that range somewhere right that's the amount that experts say can cause enough of an anxiety that you'll be symptomatic from it like you'll get headache withdrawal from that you'll get jitteriness you get the palpitations you get the C problems yeah you get it all the gauntlet so when I see that much caffeine it it does shock me they are you surprised yeah the medicine I did not know the medicine had so much caffeine in it with the I am I had no idea I was alone what all this caffeine does to our bodies yeah so you know when we taken caffeine it really affects the nervous system and if we first start by we have to absorb the caffeine in our stomach so the gut absorbs the caffeine that's the first thing that happens it travels all over the body but in particular to the brain and the brain then sends down signals it sends signals down to the heart it tells the heart to beat faster and it also sends signals to the blood vessels causing them to vasoconstrict or tighten and it causes increased blood pressure and increased pulse but there are other symptoms as well many of them that we talked about but also things like tremors or you know feeling muscle twitching and things like that feeling jittery I know you mentioned that before so there's many other symptoms that can be a part of it I'm learning on the show all the time and I found that looking into your case and understanding this gives caffeine calculus that if you get rid of the extra caffeine in your life the power-on you can be the equivalent many argue as they can anti-anxiety pill think about that taking an anti-anxiety drug prescribed by a physician might have an impact there's no greater than just getting rid of the extra caffeine in your life I think it's a pretty good trade-off yeah and for some people it really does make a big difference so would you consider giving up some less caffeine I'll try anything and you know the caffeine their effect on us varies from person to person 200 milligrams is the average number that I'd get concerned over but it might be a lower number for you maybe a tiny bit higher but I know that you can do better than 682 milligrams right so how does someone check to know if the medications are taking so that's the way you're getting a lot of yours have happy where do they hide it well no actually and this is the great thing about it a lot of the medications that we can either over-the-counter or you know even prescription it's right on the label you pick up the bottle and you can see it says caffeine right there but keep in mind though that there are some natural substances that have caffeine in them that won't be labeled as caffeine on the label things like yerba mate or Kola nuts those are natural plant substances for example they have caffeine in them and so we might see those words but not understand that they have caffeine in them what's your folks do to try to maintain stable levels of caffeine especially if they've got pain what did what are options that might work equally well well we want to look for other alternatives and especially for pain we've got lots of non-medication alternatives for pain but also medication alternatives that don't have to deal with caffeine you know tylenol and motrin for example are good options for many people alright so I have another right they come on over here if you're not gonna get rid of your caffeine for coffee drinker that's a big problem I have a surprising food fix because food can't fix it to a certain extent there are some foods that allow your body to metabolize the caffeine faster remember I say we all deal with caffeine differently it's not just our genes it's the foods reading as well so if you can include these foods and these are the classic foods that I think guys should be getting in your bodies anything we want to see like the shivers yeah and the cabbage stuffed green right the brussel sprouts broccoli cauliflower kale right if it's cabbage or if it's cruciferous that's good for you it'll help you metabolize caffeine and other medications faster as well doesn't your goal was to get rid of that caffeine bowls you're taking every day to shoot a party all right   1. Bullshyt, depression is deeper than medicine. I would know… it’s the feeling of knowing you have nothing left to live for. Knowing that no one cares about you. Going to sleep at 3am after hours of just staring blank into the darkness of your room thinking back to all the moments where you could’ve changed your life for the better but, didn’t. Not talking to another human being face to face. Not talking to anyone… family, friends, even old enemies… no one. Just you and your meaningless thoughts that torture your broken mind every single day. One after the other. Full of regrets and mistakes that can never be undone, thinking that just not being alive would be better… it sucks but something always tells you “don’t worry, everything will be fine” well I’m here to tell anyone who feels the way I do, you will never matter to this world, I know I don’t….

  2. Carbs cause depression also. When I eat much carbs, I become sad and depressed without figuring out what has caused it, after some hours. Another thing that causes depression are beta blockers, like Atenolol, a medicine to control high blood pressure. Whn I intake Atenolol, the other day comes depression.

  3. I agree with the caffeine and the message here. These ways have helped me with my anxiety which I have suffered for years. I have just started a conversation on my channel about living with anxiety..  and how hard it can make life…

    Every single one of them is toxic to the liver. Very surprised dr. Oz what not point this out. Read your labels people!

  5. For the past 20 years, I've been teaching people how to heal their body naturally. I must say this is an excellent video. I agree 100% with the message you're trying to get across to your viewers. Kudos!
    I remember when my kids were little everyone had their kids on allergy meds. Then a study came out that this drug which was over the counter could cause suicidal thoughts or depression! You got to so careful with what you take because everyone reacts differently to all meds. Everyone can get different side effects using the same drug.

  6. Great vid! I don’t believe in those prescription meds. I never get headaches but as soon as nose drops were prescribed for my allergies the headaches began. As soon as I stopped taking those drops i was back to my old self so it was the meds. They can really mess people up. Please subscribe to my channel.
