Transcription: Best Free Way to Automatically Transcribe Video (Audio to Text)

Hi, guys. Justin Brown here. Transcribing your
videos is a great way to repurpose some of
your video content. There’s a ton of
options out there to help you automate the
transcribing process. But unfortunately, and maybe
it’s just my Australian accent, but none of them seem
to work really well. Well, good news. I have two options for you,
and both of them are free. So you might have heard that
Google, Apple, and Microsoft are currently spending a
ton of money on building and refining their virtual
assistant apps so Google Now. There’s Siri. And these apps rely heavily
on voice recognition in order to deliver
us the results. So what we looked
at was how we can tap into their voice
recognition technology and use it to transcribe videos. So the first method
I’m going to show you is using your computer or
laptop and using Google Docs. So open up a new
Google document. Now, click on Tools,
and pick Voice Typing. So this enables
voice recognition for your Google doc. So if you click the
microphone and start to speak, then everything
that you say will be typed out into the document. So when you use this
principle, and click Record, and click Play on a
video, whether it’s on YouTube or on
your hard drive. And let Google Docs
transcribe everything that said in the video. So in my test, this
is almost perfect. I’ve had to make a
couple of minor changes, but overall, this
performed way better than any other software
I’ve ever tried. OK, so method 2 is very similar. We’re going to play back
a video on your computer, and we’re going to use your
phone to do the transcribing. Now in theory, this
should work a bit better because the microphones in your
phones are so much more precise and will pick up less
background noise. So how you do this is you
open up a word processing app on your phone. Whether it’s an Android
phone or an iPhone, open up a word processing
or note taking app. And on your keyboard when
you go to do text input, there’s the microphone
button down at the bottom. So when you’ve
selected voice input, that’s when you hit play
on your video content. And then hold your
phone near the computer so that it’s going to
transcribe everything that it hears from the video. Well, I hope that helps
you transcribe your videos. Make sure you subscribe

  6. This didn't work for me either. I have the video playing off of my desktop, it is an mp4, out of Google Docs I click on Tools>Voice Typing and then click on the microphone. It keeps saying "Sorry, didn't hear that. Check microphone." Cannot figure out how to make this work.

  7. Contact me if u need any work done guys I do it at a very good price ✅, if it is more than one video that needs to be done I will give a better rate 🙏

  8. This is what I got from google when I was saying that I was doing a transcription after watching a youtube video:
    Here is the result:
"Ok Solex old is what is the safest countries in because it is not say Anything in my Shoes Store full Stock vídeo YouTube good. after books to Mami. de for."

  9. please help

  10. Thank you so much for this video, it is completely awesome! I am definitely gonna try it and let you know how it turned out! Love all your videos by the way, thanks!

  11. Thanks for this video, I am looking to transcribe my YouTube videos, to use it for video description, and looking for the best way to do it, I have an idea as well, similar to yours, but, it involves using and iPhone or an android phone to sit in your pocket with external microphone attached and transcribe what your saying using software or an app while your shooting the video to save time, but I can’t help but think there is a better or an easier way, like using a video file converter to convert to MP3 then transcribe to text, I will search for a way to do this and will make a video on my channel, I think this is important for YouTube video creators due to algorithms always changing and video discussion plays a major role in video discovery, also turning CC on close captions so that AI Machine learning can pickup what’s being said in the video, and match it up to tittle and video description, the YouTube tags are less important according to the guys that mess with algorithms and mainly being used for a miss spelling, thumbnails, video tittle and description on other hand play a major role in video discovery and rankings

  12. It seems really simple! If it works you'll hear me screaming with joy in Australia! I can scream very loudly …

  13. I find https://gotranscript.com/transcription-jobs/r/452484 is one of the most trustworthy and 100% accuracy available today

  14. Both on the computer and on android, the mic picks up my voice but not the recorded audio: it make all the mimic of "hearing" it, but it doesn't transcribe it. Anyone with a solution for that?

  15. But I can't pass go transcript I try Soo much even I spend 1 half hour by own and other on software nothing work plz help me

  16. My challenge was syncing subtitles to video accurately on-screen. Now I just pay Revs $1/minute to transcribe and create millisecond perfect subtitles delivered in a .srt file which can be uploaded on all platforms effortlessly. And, since almost none of my videos are ever more than 5 minutes, the 5 bucks I pay Revs is almost a no brainer.

  18. great suggestions but i wish they worked for me….
google docs doesnt always capture the sound…works only in chrome ….and the files are saved on the drive without permission, so google has access to them…so no privacy
the android trick doesnt work either….it doesnt capture sound fast enough although i played around with the TTS options……and i wanted it so much to work

  19. hi Justin, nice video but…can you help with this? : Google doc transcription on windows 10 chrome browser and playing a youtube video only transcript 1 or 2 lines and it stopitself, doesn not does a continuous transcription of a video…

  20. Thanks so much for this video! I added my own twist to this Excellent solution you propose … I have a few Audio Lectures I wanted to transcribe — I used a software called Sunflower (I am a mac user) that automatically took sound output from iTunes of these lectures, and I turned on "text to speech" in google docs – and WHAM! I didn't have to hold my phone in front of the microphone or use external switches to feed the audio to Google Docs to have it transcribe. It's one less thing to do. I still may have to monitor it's progress in case Wi-fi connection or Google's speech feature stops in between. Thanks for this your suggestion to use Siri or Google's software my friend! Cheers!

  21. I saw someone make a comment on a different video that transcribing videos has helped in driving up views, how exactly does that work?

  22. I’d like to add one more to the list. If your experience with Facebook Ads you know that you can upload a video. When you upload a video Facebook gives you the option to add captions. It will do it automatically you may have to review it to make sure everything is correct but it saves a lot of time just to type it all out.

  23. Wow! I was ready to pay someone to transcribe something for me or purchase a software. This method is absolutely amazing. Free, and literally within 2 minutes I saw the magic. Just downloaded Google Docs on android. Opened a new doc. selected the microphone, held it down, and played the video on my pc and the transcriptions started appearing on my cellphone. Amazing. Loved it. Thank you!!!

  24. you are such a huge generous person. The brilliant idea you find out is just so amazing. i just cant describe how much thankful i am to you. Thank you, sir

  25. This works for me, just transcribed a 22-minute video but there are a few things I found you need to do.

    1. Ensure the volume on the video is loud enough.
    2. Start the video first then hit the record function in Google Docs
    3. Most importantly, leave the mouse and computer keyboard alone.

This saved me hours of work.

  26. hi , i am learning Italian language , i usually run tutorial videos on YouTube and what i want is to take the the speech as a text file , is it possible and how ? thanks in advance

  27. I'm looking to have professional looking fonts with background that goes across, and all the youtube videos on transcribe or CC all use the same text.

  28. why it stop after a while ! i used to converted a video of 18 minute ! please answer me .. thnx for this video

  29. Too bad. Yes, it does do the transcribing. But the amount of errors, complete wrong words, is just really too bad, even though it is all very well clear and properly spoken English, it simply cannot handle it.

  30. The two-step, hence using your smartphone, neither works. It just cannot follow a presenter and translate that fast enough. Good ideas, but practically it did not work. Too bad.

  31. I need software to transcribe german words from Das Boot for Subtitle purposes, I got it copies from my DVD for easier access, private use, but I really hate that the subtitls are for the ENGLISH DUB, so they don't match the spoken German audio at all. Anyone know of any programs I can run as the movie plays out to record every single word that is spoken? I am a bit of a perfectionist, and I want to create proper subtitles in several languages if possible, but I need to have all the german words properly written first.

  32. Just tried your second method with your YT video and it worked pretty well…obviously have to listen again to punctuate etc to make sense when just reading. Will try with my British accent to see. If it works with you lovely voice then hopefully it will work with mine. Thanks for the tip.
