“Music” UIC has a basic life support ambulance
that serves the campus staffed by students who are certified emergency medical technicians or EMTs. It’s the only student run university ambulance in
the state that’s licensed to transport patients. As a EMT as a paramedic you are responding to somebody quite possibly on their worst day. We have a certain skill set to help treat medical problems. But we also provide
this intimate emotional support to people who are afraid. EMTs, paramedics come on scene to handle it all and they’re doing it here at UIC. For any serious medical situation, Chicago Fire Department paramedics are
dispatched immediately, but UIC EMTs may arrive sooner and render critical aid until paramedics arrive. When we get on scene, you know we never know what to expect
and everything boils down to you know what you’ll you know what you’re doing you just have to take a step back know
it’s not your emergency so you know just use what you know and do the best you can to provide care for the patients. In September 2015, UIC EMTs
saved the life of a pedestrian who was struck and dragged under a semi-truck. The crew of three.. we had a crew of three that day. They just worked like a well-oiled machine. According to physicians, probably saved
her leg and life. To become EMTs, students take a non-credit course at UIC under a national certification. Our first class was in the summer of 2012 and we had 17 students. Now we’re doing about 80 a semester in the fall, spring and summer. Some people already have jobs, some
people are still in school and you know almost everyone wants to either you know be a doctor or a nurse or some people want to be a
firefighter. Compared to my regular classes, this class is a bit different. It’s a lot more intensive. We have to read, we have to study we have to do the quizzes and you have
to get eighty five percent or else you’re cut from the program. But we’re also doing more hands-on stuff, We’re actually applying what we’re learning in the class to like dummies or on our partners. Being a TA in that course, you’ve got to make sure you know what you’re talking about and I also feel
like that’s one of the best ways to make sure you’re on top of your stuff. For many pre-health students, it’s an opportunity to learn and apply principles of patient care The group members and all of us we have
a single like mind focus on.. We want to actually help people, we wanna do this.. make the world a better place, save lives..
and that’s something that’s helped push me forward and like actually doing well
in the class “Siren”
