University Medical Center New Orleans scheduled to open Saturday morning

REPORTING ON YOUR SIDE IN MIDCITY, I’M TRAVERS MACKEL. ADRIANNA: THE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER NEW ORLEANS OPENS SATURDAY MORNING. THE HOSPITAL WILL TAKE OVER MEDICAL SERVICES AND PATIENTS FROM THE EXISTING INTERIM LSU HOSPITAL. WDSU REPORTER KELSEY DAVIS GOT A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE NEW FACILITY THIS MORNING AND HAS MORE ON WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE HOSPITAL’S FIRST FEW DAYS OPEN. UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER NEW ORLEANS IS BUILT FOR THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE. IT’S BUILT TO REALLY FOSTER A HEALING ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR PATIENTS. WHETHER SEEKING EMERGENCY HELP, OR TREATMENT THAT COULD KEEP SOMEONE IN THE HOSPITAL FOR DAYS, EVERYONE WILL NOTICE THE NEW UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER DOES NOT LOOK LIKE YOUR TYPICAL HOSPITAL. IN ADDITION TO LARGE INSTALLATIONS OF ART THE NEW STATE OF THE ART HOSPITAL TOUTS 19 OPERATING ROOMS AND DOZENS OF EMERGENCY TREATMENT STATIONS TO BE ABLE TO HELP PEOPLE FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENTLY YOU NOTICED AS YOU CAME IN THAT OUR EMERGENCY WAITING SPACES ARE DIFFERENT FROM WHAT YOU SEE IN MOST HOSPITALS. THEY’RE SMALL. THEY’RE INTIMATE. THEY’RE NOT DESIGNED TO BE LARGE SPACES WHERE PATIENTS WAIT ALL DAY. WE WANT PATIENTS TO GET IN AND OUT FAIRLY QUICKLY. IT WILL THE EVENTUALLY HOUSE NEARLY 500 PATIENTS, AND WILL BE THE REGION’S ONLY LEVEL 1 TRAUMA CENTER, REPLACING CHARITY HOSPITAL, THAT WAS SHUT DOWN FOLLOWING HURRICANE KATRINA. DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS SIONA LAFRANCE SAYS IN ADDITION TO THE THOUSANDS OF PIECES OF ART, THE FACILITY ALSO INCLUDES A WATER COURTYARD, AND PRIVATE ROOMS, TO MAKE THE STAY, FEEL A LITTLE MORE LIKE HOME. THEY HAVE COUCHES THAT FOLD OUT SO PEOPLE CAN STAY OVERNIGHT WITH THEIR LOVED ONES. IT’S JUST REALLY BUILT SO THAT PATIENTS CAN BE COMFORTABLE. THEY CAN HAVE THE PEOPLE WHO CAN SUPPORT THEM WITH THEM DURING THEIR STAY HERE. BUT BEFORE PATIENTS CAN BEGIN GETTING TREATMENT AT UMC, THOSE CURRENTLY IN THE CARE OF STAFF AT INTERIM LSU HOSPITAL WILL HAVE TO BE MOVED IN FIRST, WHICH WILL HAPPEN SATURDAY MORNING. WE’VE HAD STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS PRETENDING TO BE PATIENTS. EVERYTHING-FROM THE BED AT LSU HOSPITAL INTO THE VEHICLES TO THIS HOSPITAL. JUST PRACTICING WHAT DO WE DO, HOW DO WE CHECK THEM OUT, HOW DO WE CHECK THEM IN, HOW DO WE GET THEM TO THE ROOM, HOW DO WE ORIENT THEM TO THE ROOM-SO WE’VE DONE THAT SEVERAL TIMES AND WE’RE GOING TO BE READY FOR SATURDAY. ONCE THE LAST PATIENT HAS LEFT ILH, THE PLAN IS TO CLOSE THAT FACILITY FOR GOOD. REPORTING ON YOUR SIDE FROM UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER NEW ORLEANS, KELSEY DAVIS WDSU NEWS. ADRIANNA: THE UMC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT WILL OPEN AT 6 A.M. TOMORROW. UMC CLINICS ARE SCHEDULED TO
