REPORTER: THESE FOLKS ARE TAKING PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT A STRANGER, MAYBE A CONTRACTOR, THE BABYSITTER OR A FAMILYMEMBER FROM GETTING A HOLD OF THEIR MEDS AND BECOMING ADDICTD. >> THERE IS SO MUCH OF IT IN SOCIETY. YOU HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TELL HELP DECREASE THE PROBLEM. REPORTER: THE DEA TEAMED UP WITH MARYLAND STATE POLICE, AND SOME COUNTIES FOR THIS NATIONWIDE EVENT. THEY SAY IT’S EFFECTIVE IN THE FIGHT. >> LAST APRIL WE DID IT, WE COLLECTED A LITTLE OVER FIVE TONS OF DRUGS WE DESTROYED. NATIONWIDE, WE COLLECTED OVER 4000. IT IS PRETTY EFFECTIVE. REPORTER: THE DRUG ABUSE STATISTICS ARE ALARMING. THE CDC FOUND IN 2015 THERE WERE MORE DRUG DEATHS NATIONWIDE THAN BY GUN VIOLENCE AND CAR ACCIDENTS COMBINED. IT ALSO SAYS 1-9 PEOPLE DIES EVERY DAY NATIONWIDE FROM A DRUG OVERDOSE. AND THOSE ADDICTIONS OFTEN BEGIN WITH THE MEDS IN YOUR CABINET. THERE WERE OVER 100 DROP OFF LOCATIONS TODAY AND ALTHOUGH IT ENDED AT 2:00, YOU CAN ALWAYS TAKE YOUR MEDS TO LAW
