SHAYLA, WASHINGTON COUNTY HOSPITAL IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT FACILITY FOR THE FOLKS IN WASHINGTON AND TYRRELL COUNTIES… BEING THE ONLY HOSPITAL FOR MILES. SO I VISTED THE AREA TODAY TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SOME OF THE PROBLEMS THEY ARE FACING. “the hospital appears to be suffering from some form of cash flow.” THE ONLY HOSPITAL FOR MILES IN WASHINGTON AND TYRELL COUTNIES TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN ALL MEDICAL SERVICES THURSDAY NIGHT. ACCORDING THE WASHINGTON COUNTY MANAGER CURTIS POTTER, THE HOSPITAL HAS BEEN SUFFERING FROM TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS.. “difficulty meeting their bills including most seriously and recently, matters related to payroll for their employees.” ALSO A SHORTAGE OF SUPPLIES. “those two matters have led to the need for the hospital administration to temporarily cease providing medical services.” POTTER TOLD ME EMPLOYEES HAVE GONE ANYWHERE BETWEEN TWO TO FOUR WEEKS WITHOUT A PAYCHECK. “obviously this is a very serious situation, not just from a maintenance of healthcare standpoint but also from an emergency medical services standpoint and of course an economical development standpoint given the number of jobs that are tied to this facility.” THE TAX COLLECTOR, SHERRI WILKINS, FROM THE WASHINGTON COUNTY TAX OFFICE SAYS THE FACILITY IS MORE THAN 41 THOUSAND DOLLARS BEHIND IN PAYMENTS AND WAS PLACED ON A PAYMENT PLAN.. BUT THOSE PAYMENTS STOPPED COMING THROUGH IN NOVEMBER 2018 AND SINCE THE SHUTDOWN.. PATIENTS HAVE BEEN REDIRECTED TO OTHER HOSPITALS IN THE EAST. 5 OF WHICH ARE VIDANT COMMUNITY HOSPITAL FACILITES. VIDANT WROTE TO US IN A STATEMENT SAYING: “we are aware of the temporary closure of the washington county hospital in plymouth and our immediate focus is the ensure the community has continued access to care. Vidant community hospitals are available to provide care of patients.” NOW, THE COUNTY MANAGER SAYS BEST- CASE SCENARIO… PAYROLL IS MET AND THE HOSPITAL CAN OPEN BACK UP. I ALSO REACHED OUT TO THE HOSPITAL’S CEO, “MELANIE PERRY,” MULTIPLE TIMES, BUT DID NOT GET A RESPONSE.
