HE WILL BE RELEASED FROM PRISON FOR A TERM OF SIX MONTHS. A CONSTABLE WAS KILLED WHEN HIS VEHICLE CRASHED INTO HER UNMARKED POLICE CAR. HE ELATED DOES HE LATER PLEADED GUILTY TO DANGEROUS DRIVING CAUSING DEATH. BECKETT WAS AN 11 YEAR VETERAN OF THE RCMP. SHE HAD ONLY JUST RETURNED TO WORK AFTER HER MATERNITY LEAVE WHEN SHE WAS HIT. AS PART OF HIS PAROLE HE MUST FOLLOW CONDITIONS INCLUDING NOT CONSUMING DRUGS OR ALCOHOL AND HE IS TO HAVE NO CONTACT WITH BECKETT’S FAMILY, FRIENDS OR COWORKERS. >> ILLICIT DRUG TOXICITY DEATHS ARE DOWN IN OUR PROVINCE. THAT WAS FROM THE BC CORONERS SERVICE TONIGHT. BETWEEN JANUARY AND JUNE THERE HAVE BEEN 538 ILLICIT DRUG TOXICITY DEATHS IN BC. THAT IS A 30 PERCENT DECREASE COMPARED TO THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR OF 763 DEATHS. THE MONTH OF JUNE ALSO SAW A DECREASE WITH 73 SUSPECTED DEATHS COMPARED TO 113 IN 2018. THAT STILL MEANS AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE ARE DYING EVERY DAY FROM ILLICIT DRUG DEATHS IN OUR PROVINCE. THE REPORT SHOWS MEN ACCOUNT FOR ALMOST 80 PERCENT OF THE DEATHS AND THE RATES OF DEATHS ARE HIGHEST IN PRINCETON, MERRITT, VANCOUVER, GRAND FORKS AND HOPE. >> A PILOT PROJECT INVOLVING A NEW DRUG TESTING MACHINE IS OFFERING MORE HOPE IN THE ONGOING OPIOID CRISIS. A SMALL TEAM OF RESEARCHERS FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND UNIVERSITY ARE USING NEW TECHNOLOGY TO TEST ILLEGAL STREET DRUGS AT THE POWELL STREET GATEWAY, ONE OF VANCOUVER’S SUPERVISED INJECTION SIGHTS. THE MACHINE CAN TEST A TINY SAMPLE OF THE DRUG SPECIFICALLY TO IDENTIFY WHAT IS IN IT, FOR EXAMPLE POWERFUL OPIOIDS AND HOW MUCH EXACTLY ARE IN THE DRUGS.
