Women in STEM: Emergency Medical Services at TSTC

HAS — SAYS PLANNING AHEAD CAN HELP. IF YOU DON’T DO THE DRILL WE AT LEAST WANT PEOPLE TO GO AHEAD AND TALK ABOUT IT. I WILL. THE DRILL IS APART OF TEXAS SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK. AND EVERY NIGHT THIS WEEK OUR OWN SAM NICHOLS WILL BE EDUCATING AND GIVING TIPS ON BEING SEVERE WEATHER AWARE ON KTAB NEWS AT 10:00. MARCH IS WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH AND TO CELEBRATE WE ARE TAKING A LOOK AT THE WOMEN OF THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES FIELD. A PROFESSION THAT IS TRADITIONALLY MORE MALE CENTERED. EARLIER WE WENT TO TEXAS STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGE WHERE THEY’RE TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF E.M.S. PROFESSIONALS. WE ARE HERE JOINED BY CANDICE. FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU FOR LETTING COMES OUT TODAY AND KIND OF TAKE OVER YOUR CLASS, IF YOU WILL. SO TELL US ABOUT THIS E.M.S. PROGRAM AND KIND OF WHAT IT DOES HERE? THE E.M.S. PROGRAM PROVIDES EDUCATION FOR PARAMEDICS AND E.M.T.s SO THEY CAN WORK ON AMBULANCES AND HOSPITALS. THEY CAN ALSO WORK IN WIND ENERGY AS WELL. SO WE TRAIN THEM TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL THAT WE CAN SO THAT THEY CAN GO OUT AND GET INTO THE JOB FORCE IN TEXAS. AND WHAT KIND OF STUDENTS DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR CLASSES? I MEAN LIKEAGE RANGE, FEMALE, MALE? SOME ALREADY WORKING IN A MEDICAL FIELD ALREADY? SOME HAVE BEEN IN THE MEDICAL FIELD. WE HAVE VERY YOUNG STUDENTS AND WE ALSO HAVE NONTRADITIONAL STUDENTS THAT MIGHT HAVE ALREADY EDUCATED IN SOMETHING AND REEDUCATING IN THIS AREA. SO IT’S PRETTY DIVERSE IN THAT ASPECT. WE ALSO MAY HAVE A CLASS FULL OF FEMALESORS A CLASS FULL OF MALESORS A LITTLE BIT OF BOTH. WE HAVE A RIDE RANGE OF STUDENTS THAT COME IN. TELL US YOUR BACKGROUND PARAMEDIC FOR 27 YEARS. I’VE WORKED IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS. RURAL AS WELL AS IN URBAN AREAS AND SUBURBAN AREAS. I ALSO WORKED HERE IN ABILENE FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND IN A RURAL ENVIRONMENT IN WINNERS OUTSIDE OF ABILENE. LET’S AUCTION ABOUT THIS WELL, E.M. SCRNG EDUCATION AS A WHOLE HAS CHANGED SO MUCH OVER THE YEARS. WE ACTUALLY TEACH THEM HANDS ON IN THE CLASSROOM. LIKE Y’ALL GOT TO SEE EARLIER, THEY ACTUALLY LEARN SOMETHING AND THEN THEY PUT IT INTO PRACTICE VERY QUICKLY. SO FOR STUDENTS THAT LIKE TO LEARN IN A HANDS ON WAY THAT’S WHAT WE DO. PEOPLE THAT LIKE TO DO THINGS THAT ARE REALLY HANDS ON. I KNOW YOU TOUCHED ON THIS A LITTLE BIT BUT FOR SOMEONE WHO GOES THROUGH THIS COURSE WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS FOR THEM AFTER THEY GET OUT? THEY DON’T HAVE TO JUST BE A PARAMEDIC ON AN AMBULANCE THERE’S REALLY A WIDE VARIETY OF JOBS FOR THEM, RIGHT? ABSOLUTELY. THEY CAN WORK IN THE HOSPITALS. I I KNOW COOKS CHILDREN’S HIRES LIKE A TON OF PARAMEDICS WHO WORKS IN THE HOSPITAL SETTING. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE OUT IN THE ENVIRONMENT IT’S A GREAT WAY TO GO. THEY HAVE SAFETY OFFICER SO IT’S GROWING ALL THE TIME BECAUSE A PARAMEDIC’S EDUCATION IT GIVES THEM THE ABILITY TO REALLY BE DIVERSE IN AT WHAT THEY CAN DO SO. THEY CAN BE UTILIZED IN HOSPITALS, IN CLINICS, ON THE AMBULANCE. JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE. AND HOW LONG IS THIS COURSE FOR THESE STUDENTS? THE INITIAL CERTIFICATION ADDITIONAL SEMESTERS. AND THEY ALSO HAVE AN INTERNSHIP WITH THAT. SO THEY ARE VERY WELL READY TO GO OUT INTO THE FIELD AND WORK ON AN AMBULANCE THE MINUTE THEY GET THEIR CERTIFICATION. TELL ME WHAT TYPE OF PERSON DO YOU THINK IS GOOD FOR THIS JOB? OBVIOUSLY IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE. IT’S A TOUGH JOB. WHO DO YOU ENCOURAGE TO COME AND APPLY AND KIND OF GET THEIR FEET WET AND SEE IF IT’S WHAT THEY WANT TO DO? I WOULD ENCOURAGE PEOPLE THAT HAVE COMPASSION AND THEY ARE VERY CARING AND THEY LIKE TO TAKE CARE OF BECAUSE THAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT TSTCE.M.S. PROGRAM INFORMATION SESSIONS ARE HELD EVERY TUESDAY 2:00 P.M. FOR MORE INFORMATION YOU CAN
